The Chief of Staff (CoS) to Sullivan Chime, the former governor of Enugu State, ( Mrs) Ifeoma Nwobodo, is currently being quizzed by operatives of the Economic Mrs Nwobodo, who arrived the Wuse, Abuja headquarters of the anti-graft agency at about some days was grilled for hours after he, was ushered into the interrogation room where a team of crack detectives commenced an intensive interrogation. The issues involve sundry allegations of conspiracy, money laundering, and misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office. She was still being grilled as of press time.

Her invitation is believed to be a precursor to the interrogation of Chime, as EFCC is said to be flooded with petitions indicting him of humongous graft during his eight-year rule of Enugu State between 2007 and 2015.

Anti Robbery Super Cop, Abba Kyari's Wondrous Service in Lagos

The name Abba Kyari has become a household name in Nigeria, especially in Lagos State. Kyari was the Superintendent of Police in charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, Lagos State for close to five years.

The name, however, means different things to different people. The name is a pride to personnel of the Nigeria Police Force. It is a name that connotes gallantry, safety and reliability to the Lagos State Government.

But it is also a name that sends shivers into the hearts of suspected, wanted and fleeing armed robbers. Sadly, however, Kyari has been transferred out of Lagos State.

Residents in Lagos State, especially those who know the price of security, weren’t too happy about it. But like the Boys’ Scout Motto, a policeman must always be prepared for transfer at any time. It is part of the trimmings that go with the job.

On July 1, 2015, Kyari resumed at his new office at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He was moved to Abuja after waging a series of wars on armed robbers in Lagos. In the war, he lost some of his men. Several times, he almost got a bullet himself, but mother luck always seems to favour him. He had been known to cry whenever any of his men dies in any circumstance, but especially in gun duels with armed robbers.

He left for Abuja with many trophies, but without the much coveted promotion he yearned and prayed for. Since Kyari took over the mantle of leadership in Ikeja, Lagos Command of SARS, he had spearheaded the pursuit and capture of many suspected armed robbers and kidnappers.

Indeed, there had been days when he had received threatening calls from armed robbers. But rather than wilt in fear, he had simply laughed at the bandits’ temerity and mapped new strategy to catch the robbers.

He and his men had been heard to say: "There’s a war going on between armed robbers and the police. It’s a war the police must win!" Under his leadership, many residents of Lagos State started sleeping with their two eyes closed.

The brilliance and vigilance of Kyari in hunting and tracking down armed robbers, often leading to arrests, endeared him to many political leaders, especially the former governor of Lagos State, Raji Fashola, who gave him many awards for gallantry. He seemed to have a flair for catching the most hard to catch armed robbers.

When he was asked if he uses voodoo in his job, he laughed and said: "Haba! No! We only deploy technology in going after these robbers." On the surface, he looks like he couldn’t harm a fly, but to armed robbers; he’s one of the most feared men in Nigeria. But surprisingly, his men are always willing to fight by his side.

There’s camaraderie between him and his men that had often led to a good synergy. This synergy is said to be the bedrock of SARS Ikeja success stories. Some of his men spoke glowingly of him. They said he would be sorely missed. One of the policemen, who simply identified himself as Kingsley, said: "Kyari is a diligent and dedicated officer whom everybody would like to work with. I’ve known him for close to three years now. It was God who elevated him due to his dedication and commitment. I can tell you categorically that at SARS Lagos State Command, we don’t see him as our superior; we look at him like our brother because he accommodated every officer he comes across in the line of duty. He sees every officer as his brother and sister. He takes time to listen to any complaint brought before him; either good or bad case. He’s a good officer to work with." Muhammad Aminu, an Inspector of Police, who said he joined Lagos SARS in 2014, said it had been educating for him working with Kyari. "What endeared me to Kyari is his simplicity and attitude towards those of us who are his junior in rank," said Aminu. "Ever since I started working with him, I’ve never seen him complaining about his job or show any incompetency. He has what it takes to be a leader. He is an officer and a gentleman to the core. I’ve worked with other senior police officers, but what I saw in Kyari is different from where I came from. Kyari is a team leader who listens to whoever comes to him. He doesn’t discriminate."

According to Aminu, he began to hero worship Kyari after he discovered the ingenuity and cleverness he deployed in hunting and arresting the kidnappers who abducted the mother of the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala in Delta State. Aminu said: "Every officer under him have learnt one detective strategy or another. He has a myriad of strategies he uses in trailing kidnappers. Another high profile robbery incident I wouldn’t forget in a hurry and which residents of Lagos will also not forget in a hurry was the broad day-light robbery at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, on March 13, 2013.

Two policemen and one of the armed robbers were killed on that day. The robbers carted away millions of local and foreign currency. But Kyari finally got them!" Another officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity described Kyari as a "God sent officer to the Lagos State Police Command." The policeman noted that Kyari treated everybody as equals; whether uniformed personnel or civilians. He said: "Kyari never showed any sentiment when dealing with anyone. One of the most interesting aspects of him was when he assigned any one of us to carry out an operation. If the policeman did the assignment well, he wouldn’t hesitate to make such a person a team leader. Kyari is a leader who teaches junior officers what it takes to be a good officer and an investigator!"

Asked how he felt about Kyari’s transfer, the man said: "I don’t feel bad. It’s a normal thing in the police to transfer anybody to any part of the country. This is part of what we signed for as police personnel."

Biodata: Kyari was born on March 17, 1975. He is a native of Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State. He is Kanuri by tribe. He however grew up at Maiduguri Borno State. He attended Government Primary and Secondary Schools in Maiduguri. He graduated from the University of Maiduguri with B.Sc in Geography 1997.

He did his National Youth Service Corps in Akwa Ibom State in 1998. He joined the Nigeria Police Force as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 2000. After passing out from training in the Police Academy Wudil Kano, Kyari was posted to Adamawa State where he served in Song, Girei and Numan Local Government Area with remarkable successes in crime bursting. He stood out when he led the arrest of a notorious armed robber called, ‘Ndagi’ a.k.a Spirit. Spirit held Numan, the third biggest town in Adamawa State hostage for several years before his eventual arrest.

Kyari joined the Police Mobile Force, popularly known as Mopol, in 2005 and was there for about five years until his posting to Lagos Command October in 2010. He was deployed as the second-in-command to SARS and later became the OC SARS on January 15, 2011.

Some of his achievements: Kyari was instrumental in the arrest of the most notorious armed robber in the South West, Abiodun Egunjobi, otherwise known as Godogodo. Godogodo was arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State, with some of his gang members. SARS recovered 42 AK47 rifles from the gang. Godogodo confessed to have killed over 150 Nigerians, including over 50 policemen during his 10 years reign as the kingpin of South West armed robbers. There was also the arrest of Benjamin Osinachi, a.k.a. China, and his entire gang of kidnappers based in Ghana, but operated in Nigeria.

Their victims included a sitting High Court Judge, a sitting local government chairman, many expatriates, amongst others. China and his gang members held South West residents by the jugulars for long. But Kyari with his men, were said to have deployed, "Advanced Technology and brought the kidnappers down." Several AK47 rifles and thousands of ammunitions were recovered from the gang. The defeat of Andrew and his gang of deadly kidnappers in Igando area of Lagos metropolis was spearheaded by Kyari and his men. SARS recovered 12 AK47 rifles, GPMGs and rocket launchers from the gang. During Kyari’s tenure, SARS arrested Chinansa and gang in the Ajagbadi area of Lagos. The SARS men recovered 11 AK47 rifles, rocket launchers and GPMGs from them. There was the arrest of the General Overseer of a church located at Ejigbo.

The General Overseer was part of the gang of robbers that attacked the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The gang was later discovered to have operated at Ogun, Kwara and Rivers States. When they were eventually arrested, police recovered five AK47 rifles and GPMGs. Kyari was also instrumental in the arrest of the kidnappers of former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela’s mother. The kidnappers used to operate in Delta, Edo and Port Harcourt. This gang killed the former Deputy Governor of Anambra State and kidnapped the wife of a sitting Supreme Court Judge.

Kyari and his men also arrested the kidnappers that abducted Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s cousin. Another gang that kidnapped a British citizen, Dickson Lee, along the International Airport Road, was also defeated. The Briton was kidnapped moments after landing in Nigeria. There was the arrest of Obinna in Onitsha, Anambra State. Obinna was the most notorious sponsor and kingpin of robbers who specialised in hijacking trailers carrying containers. SARS has also in its feather, the arrest of Emmanuel aka Arab. Arab and his gang members were described as deadly. 12 AK 47 rifles, including four AK47 rifles belonging to Policemen they killed during bank robbery in Kwara State were recovered from them. Kyari and his men led the rescue of a young Kwara female model in Delta State. The policeman and his men also led in the rescue operation of Alhaji Fashola, owner of Kings Petroleum in Isheri Oshun Lagos.

The team also rescued Alhaja Khadija in Epe area Lagos from the clutches of kidnappers. One Mr. Ademola, an hotelier in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, was also rescued from kidnappers. The arrest of Pastor Eze led gang of kidnappers and recovery of several rifles still resonated in memories of many people. Some kidnappers, based in Ajah, led by one Tony was arrested. Police recovered five AK47 rifles from the gang. Most recently, there was the arrest of several trans-border armed robbers led by one Victor who operated in Nigeria and several West African Countries. SARS operatives recovered several AK47 rifles belonging to slain police men from the gang. Just last month, Kyari led the operation that saw to the defeat of Princewill Eze a.k.a Senator Nwobodo. The suspect was described as a serial fraudster. He and his gang used to operate in EFCC uniforms and had police Walkie- Talkie and siren vehicle.

Nwobodo used to pose as one of the Directors in EFCC. Under this guise, he had allegedly duped and robbed several people. Nwobodo and his gang used to target operators of Bureau de change in different part of the country. Lagos residents are still celebrating the arrest of the evil nanny who kidnapped three boys belonging to same parents. The kids were called ‘the Orekoyas kids’. The evil nanny was arrested within three days that the case was transferred to Kyari and his men. Few days back before Kyari got his posting letter to Abuja, he led in the arrest of Lekki armed robbers.

The robbers, a few weeks back, attacked the First City Monument Bank(FCMB). They killed three policemen and a girl hawking fish. They carted away money and escaped through the waterways. Over 300 AK47 rifles, several GPMGs and rocket launchers were recovered from the Lekki robbers after their arrest. Splintered members from the gang recently attacked banks at Ijede and Ogolonto areas of Ikorodu, Lagos. They escaped, as usual, through the waterways. Police have arrested four of the Ikorodu bank robbers. Kyari has received a lot of awards to mark his achievements. But to mention a few; there’s the IGP Commendation Award for Courage 2012, 2013, 2014. There Governors Award for Gallantry, Leadership and Service excellence 2011, 2012, 2013. There’s Commissioner of Police Commendation Award for Courage 2011. Best Anti- Crime Police Officer in West Africa from Security Watch Africa, Star Award from CRAN 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Ex-lawmaker gets seven-year jail for drug trafficking

A former member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Missa Bobbo, and a notorious drug baron, Bappa Madu, of Ngurore town have been sentenced to seven years imprisonment each by a Federal High Court in Yola.

Bobbo was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in connection with unlawful possession of narcotics in 2013 while Bappa, who has twenty-five children, was arrested in June 2015.

According to a statement by NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, Bobbo was convicted for possessing 81.9kg of cannabis sativa while Bappa was found guilty of possessing 61.6kg of tramadol.

Justice Balkisu Aliyu described the involvement of the former legislator in drug trafficking as shameful during his sentencing.

Bobbo was a member of the House of Assembly in Adamawa State representing Leko-Koma Constituency between 1991 and 1993.

He was also a member of the national constitutional conference in 1995. Apart from the dried weeds of cannabis found on him; fresh plants of cannabis were also harvested from his cannabis farm.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, in his reaction, described the action of the former lawmaker as distasteful adding that the conviction would serve as deterrent to others.

Giade said, "There are no sacred cows in the war against drug trafficking. Anyone involved in criminal acts must be prepared for the day of judgement. This arrest and conviction further validate the fact that the law is supreme.

"NDLEA will continue to work towards a society that is free from drug trafficking and abuse. Both cases are significant because Bobbo is a former legislator and the second convict is a notorious drug trafficker that deals in psychotropic substances in the state."

The Adamawa State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Yakubu Kibo, said the arrest of the two convicts was a welcome development as their activities were negatively affecting the lifestyle of most youths in the state.

"The command is working very hard to reduce cases of substance abuse especially among young people. I am happy with the conviction because of the consequences of their illegal drug activities. In addition to arrest and prosecution of drug dealers, the command conducts anti-drug abuse education in schools, motor parks and other places to sensitise people on the consequences of drug production, trafficking and abuse." Yakubu stated.

The visible side of sex

So, how’s your sex life? This is a question couples find difficult to answer straight and satisfactorily whenever they are either on the phone, or on skype or in my office for counselling or consultation. Most times, when I eventually get answers, they are more of a life threatening reply than expected. Many times, these answers make you develop a deep sense of pity for either the couple or one of the partners as only 14 per cent gives you favourable answers. Why do we still have so much sexual mix-up when knowledge is available all around us? Couples are not exposing themselves to the very visible side of sex. Satisfactory sex is still a mirage to many couples.

Human beings are creatures famously consumed by thoughts of sex, yet many couples remain remarkably confused about what great sex is and how to have it. So many couples are shadowed by self-doubt and clouded by myths and misconceptions. It’s not just about our mind-set, it is also about our readiness to change and also work on our sexual mechanics. Couples are mentally and physically hampered or hindered in many ways; they are impeded on their path to greater sexual pleasure. Can’t we all just have great sex? Of course, we can.

Beforehand, I would love to encourage couples not to be disorganised with anxiety or plagued by concerns during sex especially over their performance, nor worried about the worthiness of their physique during lovemaking. This is one of the greatest destroyers of great sex. Because even when you both did well sexually, I mean your wife literarily melted at your touch, you also boom and blossom like a horse rider, and both of you had a good climax but one of you still harbour a feeling of ‘I did not do well enough’ or the other fellow is suspicious of his or her partner’s under-performance: nursing the impression that you’re not getting it as often as everyone else, comparing your sexual satisfaction with the last conversation you heard while with your pals. This feeling will make you believe there is still something better whereas you are just doing great.

Secondly, great sex is actually in the eye of the beholder. For some couples, it might be the ability to produce fantabulous multiple orgasms in their partners. For other couples, it might mean being able to last for twenty to thirty minutes; for yet others, it might be the after effect of the blowjob that is still making your brain to spin. To others, it might be the fact that you were just closer to yourselves than you used to be, while to others, it is the ability for all the sensitive erotic organs (like the nipples, breasts, clitoris, tip of the penis and some others) in you shouting ‘yeah, I am put to maximum use, thank you’ and so on. In other words, being a great lover means becoming a great lover to your spouse first and then to yourself. Best sex is when a partner sees good sex from the eye of his or her spouse.

Does he or she think heavenly about kissing? Does he or she prioritise the act of good kissing and other orally administered forms of arousal? None of these should be underestimated; it’s a tool for communicating great sex to your spouse. Try it. Tell your spouse what you want. Ask what he or she likes. The truth of the matter is if you get to know yourself and your spouse, you’ll have a much more erotic and explosive moments in your sexual relationship.

A lot of wives are very responsive to a man’s voice during lovemaking. If a husband has verbal facility and can entice his wife through his voice, that can become a powerful part of his great sex tools.

Do not paint a distorted picture for another man, ask for something new you can take home if you happen to talk with your friend about sex. When men do talk, they often boast about their sexual prowess. They tend to exaggerate their exploits, painting distorted pictures of their sex lives to one another. A lot of men end up thinking that their sex life is missing something, that other men are having wild sex or more frequent satisfactory sex.

As much as you may share sexual ideas with others, do not compare your sex life with unhealthy pornographic display. Couples should not try to learn everything about sex from pornography. But a lot may be needful if the erotic films are very educative and informative. Pornography is populated by flawlessly formed women and men with imprinted art work abdomen and ‘out of this world’ endowments. Adult entertainment makes many husbands and wives wonder: why can’t I have a wife like this or why can’t my husband be just like this man? Beside the fact that real people are not always with perfect bodies, one of the most destructive myths of pornography is that it convinces so many couples that they are either frigid or lack good libido, whereas they are just perfect and very okay. They forget that pornography is self-selecting men and women who have been injected with killing artificial libido enhancing drugs. Some of the other fictions that pornography perpetuates are the idea that women are always primed and ready (but you and I know that in the real world, many wives do say ‘no’ to sex most times if not all the time); and pornography portrays that the same moves work on every partner. Same moves do not always work for everyone. One man’s food may be another man’s poison. There is a need to keep studying your spouse regularly. Another thing is that satisfying sex always culminates in orgasm. Many couple have never experienced orgasm and they are doing pretty well sexually. Pornography can inspire us to greater sexual exploration. But learning from it takes time to implement, so there is a need for partners to be patient with each other.

Focusing on pleasurable sensations has over the years helped many couples a lot. These are techniques ranging from eye-gazing to eye-caressing and synchronised breathing that help keep you in the moment and now because great sex happens in the present. It doesn’t happen in the future. This is also applicable to anxiety. When couples fix their mind on anxiety about their performance, they mess things up; if couples can just relax and don’t bother about how well they are going to perform sexually, this will open them up to better sex and they will have great sex all the time.

Lastly, couples are encouraged to make sure they are happy with one another as this helps them to be healthy. When a husband in particular is naturally happy, he gets instant ragging erection and a very hard steaming ejaculation. As the saying goes, the best measure of a man’s character is the company he keeps. But what about his sexual health? According to a recent research, the best measure of a man’s sexual performance is his erection. Good erection equates real man and great sex. A man’s overall health directly affects the quality of his erections. And if the promise of longer life isn’t enough to convince men to take care of themselves, the promise of harder erections might be.

Ironically, a husband’s sexual performance and the quest for great sex is still the greatest hook to get him to make some real healthy good life changes. This is because it has become hard to deny the importance of erections in men’s health. It is now clear that men with heart disease are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction (ED). Men with ED were 80% more likely to develop heart disease than men without ED regardless of smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and weight. Men in their 40s who had ED had the most dramatic increase in heart disease risk. They were more than twice as likely to develop heart disease as men of the same age without ED. Men with moderate-to-severe ED were 65 per cent more likely to develop heart disease over a 10-year period compared with men who didn’t have ED.

If a blockage forms in the heart, it causes a heart attack; in the brain, it causes a stroke. What does that have to do with an erection? To get erect, the penis must become engorged with blood; and for that to happen, the endothelium must relax, allowing the arteries to widen and let blood flow into the penis. Arteries that lead to the penis are smaller than the arteries that lead to the brain or the heart. And most times, these arteries get blocked leading to ED. By definition, having ED means a man cannot get an erection hard enough for penetration or one that lasts long enough for him to reach orgasm. So to have great sex, make sure you are happy, avoid anger, worries anxiety and watch your health.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

We hardly have time for sex

Funmi as much as my husband and I love to have sex, how can we handle the prevailing obstacles? We are both tired, our own kids are light sleepers, I am not happy with my weight, I am stressed out over deadline pressures at work. In short, there is no time.

Mrs Onoso Okuhebuchi

There are many reasons why couples find themselves reaching for the pillow or the remote control instead of their spouse’s body after the sun goes down. But a healthy sex life is a key part of an intimate relationship, and neglecting it can push the two of you further apart. Sex is so important to the overall health of your relationship. So, prioritising what’s important to the two of you is very important. But first of all, you have to rediscover each other without pressure, make out for space and time where you can escape and get creative, even if that time is in your house (or car, or backyard). Plan a quick trip to any nearby eatery for lunch during your afternoon break, make sure the venue is not too far from your office let it become a habit, and you’ll feel reconnected, and the desire will just grow from there or take a break for a romantic encounter so as to reconnect in a non-sexual way. Once you’re reconnected in this way, a quick sexual encounter may regain its excitement. Then find a practical way to spice up your sex life, try a different place, a different time, a different position, have a morning quickie. Try sex in the shower, or in the kitchen. Remember to clean up afterward.

I only give in to sex to keep the marriage
For me lately, I am not in the moodI only give in to sex to keep the marriage

For me lately, I am not in the mood for sex and to cap it all, sex hurts and my husband is not cooperative at all. So for sometimes now, I have suffered in silence; giving in to sex just to keep the marriage.

Mrs. Budoju Obed

For many wives, not finding out their sexual trigger and pointing it out to their husband may be one major reason for lack of interest in sex. So kindly find your sex trigger. Then sometimes, it’s not that you’re not feeling in the mood, it’s that your body isn’t cooperating because sex may actually be painful. This can be a big issue for wives approaching menopause. It may be the sign of another health problem or behavioural issue. For example, anxiety and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to sexual dysfunction in women. In fact, not getting enough sleep diminishes female libido. As women age, oestrogens levels decrease and this affects a lot of organs, including the vagina. When vaginal tissues atrophy and thin out, losing some of its blood supply, intercourse becomes more painful. Some wives describe it as sandpaper. Vaginal oestrogens lubricants are very effective. There’s also the possibility that you may have a condition of the vagina or vulva that’s causing a problem, which is a key reason to check with your doctor should intercourse become painful. A dwindling libido may not just be a sign of aging, but no matter what the reason for your diminished desire, getting back on track with your husband sexually is going to take some effort. "Sex takes work and you have to focus on it just like everything in your relationship. There isn’t a magic pill.

Is erectile dysfunction hereditary?
For many years, my father suffered from erectile dysfunction to the point that my other entire siblings were fathered by his younger brother from an extended family. My father told me in secret that he inherited it from his father and believed that, it was better for his younger brother to father his children than for him to own up that he has impotency issue. I am in my early 20’s my question is that is this truly hereditary and what can I do not to repeat this?

The worried son

Well, impotency or erectile dysfunction is not hereditary. The things that could be hereditary are the causes of ED which could be hypertension, diabetes mellitus and some other cases, and if an individual from such linage observes a very good early healthy life style, the possibility of not repeating the same mistake is guaranteed. And for men with a diagnosed ED, one way to improve erectile dysfunction is to make some simple lifestyle changes. For some men, simply adopting a healthier lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, staying off artificial food items and drinks, reducing stress and exercising regularly may be all that is needed to find relief. Exercise regularly; this helps to strengthen the heart, builds energy level, lowers blood pressure, and improves muscle tone and strength. It strengthens and builds bones. To get the most benefit, you should exercise at least 20 to 30 minutes, preferably on most days of the week. For those who require more intensive treatment, adopting these lifestyle changes in addition to other treatments can further help. In fact, there are lots of natural herbs that help give this social killer a one off cure. Please contact me.

Lastly, do all you can to reduce stress. When stress persists, it can affect the body and illnesses can occur. The key to coping with stress is to identify stressors in your life and learn ways to direct it.
I’m never in sex mood
My husband tells me he often thinks about sex during the day, but I never do. I don’t think I’m a very sensual person. I like being close to my husband, and I almost never turn him down when he initiates sex. But truthfully, I’m never in the mood. Should I just accept the way I am, or is there something I can do to become "sexier"?

Ooni: Anxiety heightens as Oro Festival begins in Ife

The anxiety surrounding the demise of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, has continued to heighten as worshippers of Oro began the annual festival in the ancient town on Friday night.

Oro is a deity worshipped across Yoruba land, which forbids the womenfolk from going outdoors in the night during the period of its festival.

Although, sources in Ife told our correspondent that the festival, scheduled to commence on Friday night had nothing to do with the demise of the Ooni, the public believe otherwise.

The sources, however, insisted that the festival, which would last for seven nights, should not be mistaken for the commencement of the rites of passage of the Ooni.

They also insisted that the Ooni was still alive, contrary to the media reports that the monarch died in the United Kingdom.

Although some youths interviewed by our correspondent said they were not aware of the festival, they said the festival would force everybody to remain indoors at night throughout the seven- day period.

A former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Osun State, Mr. Sikiru Ayedun, confirmed to our correspondent that the festival would start on Friday night.

Ayedun, who is from Ife, said, "Yes, Oro will start tonight (Friday). But it has nothing to do with the rumour of the death of Baba (Ooni).

"It is an annual festival and it holds around this time. So, it has nothing to do with the rumour in town."

The news of the death of the Ooni was reported by the media on Wednesday, but the 16 chiefs, known as the Royal Traditional Council of the palace, led by the Lowa of Ife, Oba Joseph Ijaodola, debunked the news.

The Lowa also led the chiefs to announce to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Thursday that the monarch was alive and not dead.

“I’ll build on Abike Dabiri’s legacies” ...Hon Jimi Benson

Hon. Jimi Benson who presently represents Ikorodu Constituency at the House of Representatives, the good name of his family particularly that of his uncle, Late TOS Benson played a good role for him coupled with his strong determination to serve the people of Ikorodu Constituency

He believes the 8th Assembly has what it takes to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria to a greater height especially with the personality of President Muhammadu Buhari. He shared his views in this interview
Tell us about your experiences as regard your election, how true that the margin that gave you victory was slim.
Thank you very much for the question, the election was quite interesting. Some people thought it was close but the margin was about 25,000 difference, the number that can fill up Onikan Stadium. Ikorodu delivered even more than we thought which means, Ikorodu people believe in President Buhari, they also believe in the leadership style of Lion of Bourdillon, former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Were you at any point felt jittery before and during the election?

I believe in God, the author of our fate, I knew what He had in stock for me, my intention for the election was clear. I wanted to serve my people and didn’t have any iota of doubt of what the Lord can do about my ambition. We invested a lot in human capital, I had a very good team, we ran an issue-based campaign with a lot of technology. As we speak, I have a database of all the voters in Ikorodu, I have a volunteer scheme also that has 25,000 members. We prepared well

and God did it for us. The only issue that I had was that the election was militarised because our election took place the same day with the Presidential election. The PDP, in their desperation for power used a lot of soldiers to harass innocent voters to rig the election in their favour but it did not affect us.

Do you agree that the name of Late TOS Benson also worked for you in this election?

A good name will always pave way, I thank God that I had a great uncle who contributed a lot to Ikorodu and beyond. I also pray to leave a legacy for my own children; I am hardworking, I follow instruction of my uncle and it all worked for me in the election.

Some outskirts of Ikorodu used to be for the PDP in the past elections, how were you able to break into that stronghold?

In this election, it was issue based, we toured all the 30 wards in Ikorodu. We sat and ate with them, by virtue of my work, I have known all nooks and crannies of Lagos State particularly Ikorodu before the election, so it was easy for me. I felt their pulse even before the election and knew their challenges and needs. I was able to do some palliatives for them because they believe in me and my promises and I pray to God to help me fulfill them. We shall be relying on Governor Ambode’s promise who would grant one billion naira wealth creation policy. Ikorodu indigenes who are unemployed would start up their businesses. The governor would also provide 20 roads in each local government in a year, so if all these are implemented; Ikorodu will never be the same again after four years.

Your predecessor, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa to some people did very well while some felt she did not perform well, do you think her scorecard affected you positively or negatively?

Hon. Abike Dabiri did very well, like I always say she laid the foundation which I will build on. She’s very popular at the floor of the Lower Chambers. When I tell colleagues at the Assembly that I am from Ikorodu, her name comes up, she has been a worthy ambassador of Ikorodu. Back home, she could have done better as some thought, people mistake the function of legislature with that of executive. I will say Abike Dabiri came, saw and conquered.

Where are you starting from in terms of promises you made to your people?

We promised to be good ambassadors by influencing development projects to our constituents, in my community. There are lots of roads that are bad, I will put pressure on Federal Government to repair bad roads in Ikorodu. There is a federal hospital at Igbogbo area which has been abandoned for a while, I am going to use my influence to make sure it is fixed. There

are also constitutional issues, some local government areas have not been recognized and I am so passionate about it; Lagos State needs to be given special attention. Apart from federal government, Lagos State has the highest number of employees, we need federal government’s support for the Light Rail project currently going on. There is no reason why we can’t have a free Trade Zone in Ikorodu. Many of our youths are unemployed here, I hope to influence projects that will create jobs for our youths.

Share the experiences you have gained so far on the floor of the assembly.

It’s a big departure from the 7th Assembly, I learnt that in the last Assembly they had only 30% of people who have degrees but in this 8th Assembly, 75% of candidates in the House have degrees, so the level of intelligence may be higher.

Dramatic U-turn! EFCC Reduces N1B Subsidy Charges Against Abdulai Alao To N116M

A funny episode is playing out at the court of law over the dramatic twist by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to reduce the One Billion Four Hundred and Seventy One Million Nine Hundred and Sixty Nine Thousand Sixty Hundred and Forty Three Naira Thirty One Kobo oil subsidy theft charge against the son of late islamic cleric, Alhaji Abdulazeez Arisekola Alao, Abdulai to One Hundred and Sixteen Million Naira for lack of substance.

Information pieced by Papermacheonline revealed that the anti corruption agency’s triumph in the celebrated cases of oil theft that became public knowledge some years ago was reduced to mere figment by the report of a private forensic firm which faulted most of the allegations by the EFCC against the Axx Energy boss and the confession of a major witness who claimed he was made to bear witness against Abdulai under duress.

A report by a daily newspaper, Daily Independent also lend credence to the dramatic turn of events where the prosecuting agency could not provide solid evidence to back up the charges against Abdulai.

A part result by the prosecution witness, Okechukwu Opo alleged he was threatened by the EFCC to deny his earlier statement that he indeed signed the Empty Tank Certificate of MT Brave Vessel.

Mr Opo, a surveyor at the General Marine Oil Services gave details of how he was intimated by the EFCC to give a false report that he didn’t sign the Empty Tank Certificate.

A source within the commission disclosed to papermache that ‘Abdulai is just a victim of circumstance and a fall guy used to cover up the dirty deals of other influential individuals who are the principal actors in the oil subsidy case’.

The new development in the case of Abdulai was said to have raised the hopes of others who claimed they had been wrongfully accused and suffered similar fate as Abdulai.

The emerging fresh facts bring a little succor to Abdulai and his counsels who have been putting up a good show at the court to establish his innocence.

The vilification and humiliation he had suffered in the wake of the oil subsidy scandal is likely to be over if his counsels can further convince the court of the faulty charges against him.

P’Harcourt, Warri refineries begin crude production – NNPC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has announced the successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries after nine months of phased rehabilitation conducted by its in-house engineers and technicians.

The national oil company made the announcement on Wednesday through a statement.

It said the plants had commenced preliminary production of petroleum products after successful test-runs, noting that while the Port Harcourt Refining Company was ramping up capacity to about 60 per cent of the 210,000 barrels per day of crude capacity, production from the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company had been projected to hit 80 per cent of its installed capacity 125,000 bpd.

According to the NNPC, the Port Harcourt refinery will have a product yield of five million litres of petrol per day, while the Warri refinery will contribute 3.5 million litres of petrol to the local refining capacity.

Providing insight into the rehabilitation of the plants, the NNPC noted that it had to adopt the phased rehabilitation approach after the original builders of the refineries, who were initially contacted for the turnaround maintenance of the plants, came up with unfavourable terms.

"Though a decision was taken in 2011 to rehabilitate all the refineries using the original refinery builder of each of the refineries, we were impelled to switch strategy after the ORBs declined participation and nominated some partners in their stead, who came up with outrageously unfavourable terms," it explained.

The corporation stated that the nominated partners, as sole bidders, came up with humongous price offers after two years of thorough and exhaustive scope of work definition and negotiations, adding that the proxies were also unwilling to provide post rehabilitation performance guarantees.

"The phased rehabilitation strategy, which entailed phased and simultaneous rehabilitation of all the refineries using in-house and locally available resources in line with the spirit and letter of the Nigerian Content Law, also involved the use of Original Equipment Manufacturer representatives to effect major equipment overhaul and rehabilitation," it added.

The NNPC also noted that the phased rehabilitation programme, which commenced in October 2014 after the required funding stream was established, created a 70 per cent reduction in costs, which helped largely in mitigating the financing challenges of the rehabilitation.

It said that with the successful re-streaming of the PHRC and WRPC, attention had now shifted to the 110,000 barrels per day Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, which is billed to come on stream soon.

In a related development, the NNPC has said that it has successfully recovered the System 2B Pipeline, which was breached last week in Arepo, Ogun State.

The corporation stated that its team of engineers deployed in the scene immediately after the pipeline was vandalised, was able to access the pipeline after the fire had put out the ensuing fire and commenced repair work immediately.

It added, "We wish to announce that the vital System 2B Pipeline, which was breached at Arepo last week, has been fixed and brought back on stream. Pumping of products through the system commenced on Monday upon the successful completion of repair works over the weekend.

"We also wish to call on all those engaged in the criminal acts of pipeline sabotage and oil theft to desist in order to avoid such horrendous deaths as was witnessed in the recent incident."

Corruption: FG goes after ‘super rich’ civil servants

FEDERAL Government’s anti-corruption operatives have been sent after ‘super rich’ public officers who have multiple properties and other assets suspected to have been the rewards of graft.

For now, The PUNCH learnt, the searchlight of the anti-corruption agents was on civil servants that possess many properties in the Federal Capital Territory.

Our correspondents learnt in Abuja on Wednesday that operatives in the Assets Tracing, Recovery and Management Unit of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission had been asked to haul in suspects for interrogation and recovery of ill-gotten assets in their possession.

It was gathered that the ICPC had strengthened the ATRMU by posting more personnel to the unit to ensure the success of its campaign.

An operative at the ICPC, who confided in one of our correspondents, said the ICPC was using the anti-corruption transparency unit of the commission in ministries, departments and agencies to coordinate the ongoing investigation of the "super rich" civil servants in the country.

It was learnt that the ICPC was relying on petitions from civil servants and the ACTU operatives to carry out its investigations into the activities of the affected civil servants.

It was gathered that the ICPC operatives’ focus had been on civil servants who have more than three properties and a fleet of cars beyond their income.

Although the source did not mention the number of civil servants that had been quizzed in relation to the new move to check fraud in the civil service, it was learnt that several personnel of the civil service had been placed under watch by the ICPC.

The source, who spoke to The PUNCH, said any civil servant found to have compromised his office to acquire wealth would be charged to court after the proceeds of the corrupt acts would have been confiscated by the Federal Government.

The source said, "The ICPC is intensifying efforts to retrieve some of these stolen assets from those involved.

"You know that the commission has a unit called the Assets Tracing, Recovery and Management Unit. This is the unit that is involved in probing those who have such assets with stolen funds.

"In fact the operatives are working very discreetly on the issue but the focus of the ICPC’s probe is the civil service.

"Those civil servants living a life beyond their means, their lifestyles are under watch. People are monitoring them, whistle-blowers are writing petitions and the Assets Recovery Unit is following up on them.

"Another thing is that we have the Anti-Corruption Transparency Units in all the agencies; these units are being supervised by our officers. They are collaborating with whistle-blowers in the various ministries and agencies…"

When one of our correspondents contacted the Resident Consultant, Media and Events of the ICPC, Mr. Folu Olamiti, for his comment on the telephone, he said that he was aware of the presence of the ARMTU and its constitutional functions but asked our correspondent to call back for a response on the current investigation.

However, our correspondent could not get him to comment on the story as the subsequent calls to his mobile telephone did not connect.

The Federal Government has expressed its worry about the rate of corruption in the civil service.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, had in the past urged a former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, to put in place an internal mechanism to check the negative trend.

The commission had in a statement by its spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, quoted Lamorde as citing the involvement of civil servants in the pension fraud investigations.

Lamorde had said, "You should look inward and focus on issues of welfare that may be the cause of the incessant corrupt acts. Even though this is not an excuse before the law, we should be able to ask ourselves why for example most properties in the Federal Capital Territory are found to be owned by civil servants through proxies."

The Ahmed Joda Transition Committee has also lamented the corruption and inefficiency in the civil service.

The committee, in its report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari, noted that the public service was characterised by weak governance, bureaucratic bottlenecks and low professional standards.

In the report, a copy of which was obtained by The PUNCH on Wednesday, the committee said that there was low productivity, graft as well as inefficiency in the civil service.

It recommended that the public service should place emphasis on performance

According to the committee, government should "implement a merit-based performance management system, recruitment and deployment process."

It added that government should "set clearly defined goals and targets for public officers and consequences for non-implementation."

Meanwhile, wife of the senate president, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, again reported at the EFCC office on Wednesday to continue her interrogation by anti-graft operatives.

She arrived at the commission by 10 am and was released to go on administrative bail by 4.30pm.

Administrative bail means that Mrs Saraki would make herself available at the commission any time she is required to do so.

Her interrogation had commenced on Tuesday when EFCC operatives were said to have grilled her for over six hours.

The senate president’s wife is being investigated for her role in the alleged sleaze that took place during her husband’s tenure as governor of Kwara State.

She was alleged to have involved herself in the award of contracts in the state and laundering of millions of naira.

Nigeria’s envoy visits Sijuwade’s family in UK

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Dr Dalhatu Tafida, yesterday visited the London home of Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Ooni of Ife, to commiserate with his family on the passing on of the foremost monarch.

Tafida said he visited the family, including Oba Sijuwade’s son Adetokunbo, and spent about one hour with them. The envoy condoled with the family on behalf of the Federal Government and told them they could ask for consular support should the need arise.

At Oba Sijuwade’s home were his wives, children and an unnamed traditional ruler from Osun State, according to a source present during Tafida’s visit.

Efforts to reach Adetokunbo, who stays in Banyan House in the upscale neighbourhood in Lensbury Avenue of Southwest London, were not successful last night. Calls to his phones were answered, but he kept saying: "I will call you back."

Crowds besieged the palace in Enuwa, Ile-Ife yesterday. As early as 9am, hundreds of people had gathered at "Ile Oodua" the sprawling palace of the monarch.

Relations of the monarch and reporters were allowed into the palace and received by members of the Royal Traditional Council, but many indigenes and residents were denied entry by the guards.

The chiefs said the Ooni "is alive and in good state of health".

The Royal Traditional Council, comprising all traditional chiefs and title holders in Ile-Ife, maintained that Oba Sijuwade was hale and hearty.

Speaking with reporters at the House of Chiefs within the palace, the Lowa of Ife, Oba Joseph Ijaodola, advised people to disregard the report in the media that the monarch had died in a London hospital of an undisclosed illness.

The Secretary of the Council of Ife, the Ladin of Ife, High Chief Adetoye Odewole, also said the Ooni spoke to the chiefs on telephone few hours earlier.

He said: "As I am speaking to you now we, his chiefs, have not heard anything like that. This is not the first time such rumour will be carried about our father. They did it in 1984, also in 2004 and now these people are coming up with another rumour. Oba Sijuwade is in sound state of health."

The Chairman, Ife Development Board, Prof. Muheeb Opeloye, was attending to visitors.

He advised youths at the palace gate not to panic because the Ooni was alive.

When the Private Secretary to the Ooni, Mr. Saka Awojoodu, was approached by a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to react to the development, he simply said, "I have nothing to disclose."

Mr. Bisi Oduyemi, one of those who was at the palace, said he came to find out whether the news of the monarch’s passing on was true.

"I am here to find out whether the story of the Ooni’s death was true. I heard the news on radio during the newspaper review this morning but I am here to confirm this from the palace chiefs and unfortunately, they are not forthcoming," Oduyemi said.

Another resident, Mrs Idayat Akinrolu, said she abandoned her house chores to find out the authenticity of the story from the palace.

The state government and the Osun Council of Traditional Rulers have yet to react to the development because they were waiting for official announcement by the palace chiefs.

A source at the palace, who preferred not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed that the monarch was dead.

According to him, it was normal for the chiefs to deny Ooni’s death because certain traditional rites had not yet been carried out before the news of the monarch’s death was received by the public.

For instance, he said parts of all the trees in the palace must have been cut as a sign of a bad omen to authenticate the news.

He also said once a particular traditional chief enters the palace his appearance would be a harbinger of the death of the Ooni after which, he said, none of the traditional property would be allowed to be taken out of the palace.

Condolences from prominent Nigerians were pouring in yesterday, though some were cautious.

House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara expressed shock over the passage of Oba Sijuwade.

He described his passing as a monumental loss to the nation.

Dogara, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, said: "I join our countrymen and women to mourn the demise of the Oni who was a father to all. Nigeria has lost one of its most respected and revered tradituonal rulers.

"The late monarch has lived a fulfilled life worthy of emulation. I pray God to give his family and the Ife Kingdom, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

"I use this medium to also commiserate with the government and people of Osun State over the death of the revered monarch."

Former Osun State Governor Isiaka Adeleke described the late Ooni of Ife as an epitome of intellectual kingship.

In a message issued on his behalf by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Olumide Lawal, Senator Adeleke said the late Oba Sijuwade represented a rare class of traditional rulers, who gave monarchy a touch of panache, glamour and graceful candour.

The Asiwaju of Edeland recalled his interactions with the late Ooni of Ife during his tenure as the first governor of Osun State between 1992 and 1993.

He described him as a royal eagle in all its ramifications, who has "flown home" in a blaze of glory. He prayed to God to grant him eternal rest and those he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss.

Adeleke urged the people of Ile-Ife and Osun to roll out the drums and give the foremost monarch first class burial.

Ndigbo Cultural Society of Nigeria (NCSN) mourned with "our Yoruba brothers and sisters over the sudden pass of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade".

In a statement by its President Chief Udoka Udeogaranya, the group said: "Oba Okunade Sijuwade was one of the few top class traditional rulers on the continent of Africa, whose fame and riches is known and recognised throughout the four corners of the world and truly, he was ‘King of Africa’.

"Oba Okunade Sijuwade was an Oba of Obas in the Yoruba nation and while other traditional rulers sought to visit Mr. President, Presidents sought to visit Oba Okunade Sijuwade and he would always put the needs of the Yoruba nation first and foremost.

"We urge the sons and daughters of Odua to put aside all their differences and come together and ensure that Oba Sijuwade received a befitting burial and chart a united course for the betterment of the Yoruba nation.

"We condole with the Yoruba nation over this irreplaceable loss and that the Almighty God will grant them the fortitude to bear the pains."

Gbajabiamila emerges house majority leader

Femi Gbajabiamilia the lawmaker who was favourite of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to become speaker of the federal house of representatives but lost to Yakubu Dogara has emerged the majority leader of the lower chamber.

Yakubu Dogara, the speaker, made the announcement on the floor of the green chamber on Tuesday.

He also announced Buba Jibrin as the deputy house leader, Alhassan Doguwa as the chief whip, and Pally Iriase deputy chief whip.

Also, for the minority principal positions, Chukwuma Onyema is the minority house leader; Leo Ogor, deputy minority house leader; Umar Barde; minority whip, and Binta Bello; deputy minority whip.

The lower chamber had been rocked by crisis over the sharing of principal positions since June 9 when the presiding officers were elected.

While the APC leadership leadership had preferred Gbajabiamila, who is from the southwest, for house leader, Dogara’s group wanted the position to go to the northwest.

The party had intervened at different times, even through its governors, but the impasse seemed unbreakable.

Last Saturday, Dogara’s loyalists led by Abdulmumin Jibrin, announced that a peace deal had been reached with Gbajabiamila’s group. But Gbajabiamila’s group later denied reaching any accord with the other side.

On Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari waded into to the crisis by summoning the lawmakers, but the meeting ended in deadlock.

After Gbajabiamila’s emergence and the announcement of other principal officers, the house adjourned to Wednesday.

I caught my fiance with his boss

By Tolusexy · · 239 Views
My heart is broken right now, even shattered into pieces. I never prayed for this to happen to me but now that the worst has happened, what do I do? Frank and I have been dating for close to five years now and we are
planning to get married this December. He is loving, caring and generous and there was no reason for me to doubt his faithfulness to me. Last week Friday, I decided to spend the weekend in his house, he had told me he would be travelling from office on an official assignment and won't be back until Saturday afternoon. I was surprised to have met the door unlocked, I entered and I heard voices coming from his room so I went inside, I couldn't believe what I saw; my fiance and his boss having sex. They weren't even aware of my presence until I screamed his name. I thought he would be shocked to see me but he seemed unperturbed and his boss looked at me disgustingly, he then ordered me out of his house. I couldn't believe my five years relationship and the man I cherished so much are gone just like that! I cried till I slept off that night, I didn't even know how I got home. I woke up and wished I had died in my sleep. I can’t stop the tears, I thought I have found my man and to think of all the time and energy all wasted….

Sergio Romero completes Manchester United move after signing three-year deal

Manchester United confirmed the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a three-year deal.

The 28-year-old was a free agent and has been brought in to replace the outgoing Victor Valdes as United’s back-up stopper.

Romero played under Louis van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar when they were crowned Eredivisie champions in 2009.

The Argentine joined up with the rest of the team on their pre-season tour in the United States.

He said: ‘I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United. To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me.

‘Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career ‘He was also a former player of mine. I was trainer-coach, manager of AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, I picked him up when he was 19 and he was a great talent. We became champions with him, with a minor club, and in the Netherlands it was a fantastic result of course.

‘I know him very well and I think in our situation, if De Gea is going or not going, it is always a threat and we have to take care, make sure that we are prepared and that is why I think it is very good that Sergio Romero is now a Manchester United player.’

United beat Barcelona 3-1 in the International Champions Cup tournament on Saturday in Santa Clara and will next face Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago on Wednesday.

Bobbi Kristina to be buried next to late mother, Withney Huouston

She passed away outside Atlanta in the hospice care facility where she's been since June 24 ... when her family decided to take her off all meds. However, a specialist had told them earlier that there was no chance of recovery.

The family says Bobbi Kristina was surrounded by family and, "She is finally at peace in the arms of God."

Her body will be flown to New Jersey following a funeral service in Atlanta so she can be laid to rest alongside the singer.

Bobbi Kristina was found submerged in her bathtub on January 31, and police believe she was underwater for anywhere between 2 and 5 minutes. Paramedics were able to resuscitate her, but she was in a medically induced coma and placed on life support.

Ultimately, Pat Houston and Bobby - co-guardians for Bobbi Kristina -- had to make the decision to withdraw medications. It was a rare moment of agreement for the Browns and Houstons ... who had battled about BK's condition throughout her hospitalization.

The D.A. has been gearing up for a murder case, and her boyfriend Nick Gordon would be their first person of interest. Police said there were bruises on Bobbi Kristina's face and body after Gordon and a friend, Max Lomas, found her in the tub.

Of course, Whitney died from a drug overdose in 2012 while sitting in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.May her soul rest in perfect peace.

Lagos First Lady, Bolanle Ambode urges youths to engage in productive activities

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, on Monday charged youths to engage in activities that will ensure meaningful and productive use of their time during the summer break.

She spoke at the opening of ‘Activate Youth Camp’, a 7-day free residential camping for about 200 youths, organized by Annie’s Place, a non-governmental organisation at Reagan Memorial School, Sabo Yaba.

Mrs. Ambode who said that the cornerstone of successful living was serious hard work, dedication, strength of character and the fear of God, urged participants to see the camping as unique, as its central objective is to mould youths into good, useful and productive adult citizens.

She said the essence of the programme is to discover and develop the hidden talents in youths and prepare them for the future.

"Therefore, the strategy is to challenge you physically and mentally, through rigorous training during the camping period and to put you through experiences that would make you self-believing and self-respecting with a positive attitude to life. So, feel free to pursue your respective passions, whatever skills and vocationscooking, weaving, baking, hat making, handcrafts, dress making, hairdressing or indeed any other’’, she said.

She commended the conveners for addressing the challenge of youth engagement, stressing that it remains a major catalyst for national development, as no nation is assured of a secured and prosperous future when its youths are without character and focus.

Advising the lucky beneficiaries of the programme, Mrs. Ambode urged them to remember the biblical parable of the unfaithful servant and advised them not to bury their talents but take action, so as to excel in life.

"Imbibe the fear of God, be humble, disciplined and respectful, honour your elders and remain focused in your academics, as well as other endeavours which are basic requirements for a successful life", she said.

In her welcome address, convener of ‘Activate Youth Camp’, Mrs. Kikelomo Omooba, disclosed that the week ahead promises to be exciting, educating, inspiring, empowering, thought provoking, as it will be inclusive of physical, intellectual, emotional, mental, social and spiritual activities.

Omooba urged the facilitators to be of good conduct and integrity, reminding them that the objective of the camp is to change lives and build destinies, just as she urged participants to look deeper and learn better.

Nnamdi Okonkwo, Managing Director and CEO of Fidelity Bank plc commenting on the results, stated that:
"Business operations in H1 2015 were challenged by a difficult operating environment due to heightened political risks in Q1, weaker government revenues arising from lower crude oil prices, a tighter monetary policy environment and currency devaluation concerns which all translated to a significantly lower GDP growth rate.

Despite these challenges we continued with the disciplined execution of our medium term strategy (albeit taking into consideration the weaker macro-economic environment). Profit before Tax (PBT) increased to N9.7bn despite significantly increased loan provisions anchored on our conservative view of selected sectors. We are pleased with the year-on-year (y-o-y) and quarter on quarter (q-o-q) growth in our profitability given the reduced level of business activities in H1 2015.

Net Interest Income increased by 8.3% y-o-y to N26.8 billion and 16.7% q-o-q as we increased yields on earning assets faster than the growth in funding costs. This increased our NIM to 6.6% in H1 2015 placing us closer to our 2015 target of 7.0%. Net gains on financial instruments was N1.1bn in Q2 against a loss of N1.5bn in Q1 as we continued to optimize our balance sheet.

Net Fee Income increased by 25.9% y-o-y to N15.2 billion but declined by 25.6% q-o-q due to lower FX Income on the back of trading restrictions in the market. Our retail strategy continued to deliver increased revenues as electronic banking income increased by 65.2% y-o-y to N2.0 billion and 37.4% q-o-q driven by the increased migration of customers to our electronic channels and improved customer experience.
Operating Expense grew by 13.8% y-o-y to N28.8 billion and 8.4% q-o-q on the back of increased staff remuneration and promotions, regulatory costs (NDIC/AMCON) and advert costs. However, Cost-Income Ratio declined to 69.2% in H1 2015 from 74.2% in the 2014FY as revenue growth outpaced the increase in operating cost.

Loan growth picked up in Q2 (5.8% YTD growth) with the conclusion of our N30 billion bond. Cost of Risk increased to 1.1% (slightly above our guidance) as we improved our coverage ratio, NPL Ratio remained within our guidance at 3.7% due to the growth in the loan book.

Total Deposits declined by 2.9% YTD to N796.5 billion and 0.1% q-o-q as tighter monetary policy and the CRR harmonization increased effective funding costs. With Private Sector Depositors accounting for 87% of our deposits, we sterilized an additional N21 billion due to the CRR harmonization. Though Interest expense increased by 9.1% y-o-y, it declined by 1.9% q-o-q due to the diversification of our funding sources.

We remain focused on the execution of our medium term strategic objectives in the Retail/SME/E-Banking and Niche Corporate Banking segments and look forward to delivering another positive set of results in the next quarter"
