Buhari, Elumelu, Umunna makes list of 100 most influential Africans in 2015

Tony Elumelu, Chairman, Board of Directors, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has been named among the "100 most influential Africans of 2015." The list published by pan African magazine "New African" presents Africa’s definitive power list and profiles the continent’s top game changers in eight different fields: Politics (22); Public Office (4); Arts and Culture (21); Business (21); Civil Society (11); Technology(9); Media (7); and Sports (5).

Also on the list are President Mohammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan. Both President Buhari and Jonathan made the list for the significant role they played in Nigeria’s 2015 elections which saw the first successful transfer of power from a ruling government to an opposition party in Nigeria. Jonathan’s humility in defeat and Buhari’s magnanimity in victory ensured that Nigeria avoided a post-election crisis.

Other Nigerians recognised include the UN Special Advisor on Post Development Planning, Amina J Mohammed, AfDB’s new President Akinwumi Adesina, and Nigerian Diasporan, UK MP and Labour Party leadership hopeful, Chuka Umunna as well as Arumah Oteh, World Bank Vice President and Treasurer.

Amina Mohammed is Nigeria’s current Minister of Environment. Before her appointment, she was Special Adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning at the United Nations where she contributed to the shaping of the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development across three years of complex negotiations and the most inclusive consultation process in the history of the United Nations, her vision and voice helping to bring people together, enlist new partners to the cause and reach global consensus on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Akinwumi Adesina is Nigeria’s former Minister of Agricultural where he led a drive to curb corruption of the fertilizer distribution scheme and significant improvement in agricultural production that led to a sharp drop in food imports.

Chuka Umunna was recognised for the significant positive recognition he has brought Nigerians in the UK while Arumah Oteh was recognised for her elevation to one of the most significant positions at the World Bank.

Omar Ben Yedder, Group Publisher, of the New African said the list of "100 Most Influential Africans" celebrates the "men, women and organisations that have shaped our beloved continent, the trail blazers, influencers and the rising stars who are redefining Africa’s future in the various spheres in which they operate."

Explaining the selection of Elumelu as one of the most influential Africans, he said "In this increasingly global and interconnected world, we need champions; those game changers who are making a difference, changing perceptions and shaping our definition of what is possible. This is why it is our honour to recognise you as one "New African’s 100 most influential Africans 2015. We are so proud of everything you have accomplished."

Elumelu is also the Founder and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, a privately held investment firm, with interests in the power, Oil and Gas, financial services and hospitality sectors across Africa. He is Chairman of Transcorp, Nigeria’s largest listed conglomerate; and Seadrill Nigeria Limited.

In 2010, Mr. Elumelu created the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which champions African entrepreneurship. In January 2015 the foundation launched the $100 million Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme to seed and support 10,000 African entrepreneurs over the next decade. The programme represents Tony’s personal commitment to the economic philosophy of "Africapitalism", a development model he propagated, that sees the African private sector as the catalyst in ensuring Africa’s sustainable social and economic development.

The 2015 cycle of Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP) resulted in the selection of 1,000 entrepreneurs from 51 African countries and territories for business training, active mentoring, networking and seed capital funding for their start-up business ideas. The TEEP entrepreneurs represented a diversity of sectors, ranging from agriculture to education to energy, fashion and ICT, emphasising Africa’s potential. The TEEP initiative has been recognised as one of the most impactful developmental initiatives on the African continent.

Buhari: no group’ll hold Nigeria to ransom again

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday  warned that any threat to Nigeria’s peace would not be tolerated.

"We must never again allow any group to hold the nation to ransom under whatever guise," the President said in his Christmas message.

There has been an upsurge in the activities of separatist pro-Biafra groups, especially the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), which has coordinated protests in Southeast state capitals and other places, calling for Biafra State and the release of detained underground Biafra Radio director Nnamdi Kanu.

Islamic Shiites and soldiers clashed in Zaria where they blocked a road on which Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai was travelling. Many sect members were killed and their leader Sheikh El-Zakzaky detained.

Besides, the Boko Haram insurgency is still being tackled.

The President said: "I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s Christmas. On this occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us all rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others which he taught.

A greater manifestation of these virtues and ideals in the lives of Nigerians, he said, will immensely help Nigeria to become a more united, peaceful, secure and progressive nation.

The President also urged Nigerians to reach out in love and compassion to fellow Nigerians who are in distress.

He added: "I particularly urge you all to remember victims of terrorism and insurgency in the country, especially Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

"The Federal Government will continue to collaborate with state governments and other stakeholders to ease the harsh conditions in IDP camps, while the ultimate objective remains to quickly put an end to insurgency and return the IDPs to their homes.

"This administration has taken a number of measures to restore hope to our people. The 2016 Budget defines our commitment to giving Nigeria a new lease of life. Our change slogan is not a campaign gimmick but a promise that must be kept. We are determined to bring about tangible changes in the lives of our people.

"In this regard, efforts will be intensified to recover stolen funds, block revenue leakages and enthrone due process, transparency and accountability.

He described public office as a public trust that must be held to the highest ethical standards.

Remembering Christmas, By Reuben Abati

Christmas looks so different these days from what it was when I was growing up. It is so different it is almost unrecognizable. In this same country, in the 70s, Christmas was a season of celebration, but also of spiritual upliftment, joy abundant, hope, reaffirmation of faith in the certainty of Salvation, and the ritual of that which begins, and that which ends, as a New Year beckoned. We were brought up on a steady diet of Sunday School lessons, and so Christmas and Easter were very much a part of our growing up. We always looked forward to Christmas with excitement. It was that time of the year when we all wanted to act one role or the other in the re-enactment of the drama of Nativity.

The preparation for this drama, which was usually staged during Christmas service, to the sound of melodious songs and priestly excitement, was the high point on Christmas Day of the celebration of Christ The Lord. Weeks earlier, the church organized Christmas Carols. If you made the special choir, you felt as if you had won a lottery. Everyone was a songster of sorts, belting out Christmas Carols in both English and the local language. Parents singing. Children singing. Everyone dancing. The feel-good mood was so intense. You could run into people on the streets and the standard greeting, be they Muslims or Christians, was "Merry Christmas!" The official church Carol team went from one church member’s home to another to deliver the good tidings of the season and to announce the coming birth of the Saviour. Christmas strengthened our sense of community, and our Christianity and faith as well.

It was also that time of the year for the reinforcement of family values. People whom you had not seen for the whole year travelled home from their stations to be part of Christmas. You got the chance to meet cousins, make new friends, and sing till you almost went hoarse. I wasn’t much of a singer or drummer- my friends used to laugh each time I missed a note or a beat and we would spend weeks afterwards mimicking each other. In short, Christmas was real fun. But it was relatively a simple, inexpensive celebration, year after year. Our parents did not have to borrow, or go bankrupt, or agonize, for Christmas to be meaningful.

We got one or two new clothes and shoes: those were the usual Christmas gifts. On Christmas day, after church, lunch didn’t have to be anything extra-ordinary: it was no more than rice and chicken. In those days, chicken was a special delicacy, reserved for Sundays, or special occasions like birthdays or Christmas, very much unlike now that every child acquires the taste for tasty chicken from the womb! On Boxing Day, we either visited friends or stayed home, and played with firecrackers and bangers on the streets. Those children who could not afford bangers were not left out. They improvised with local devices made by blacksmiths. That contraption produced even better effect.

Our Muslim friends usually joined us, but they always teased us. In those days, Muslims and Christians celebrated religious festivals together, without any hang-ups about the difference in faith. Virtually every family had Muslim and Christian branches. Give it to Muslims, however, their own seasons were usually more elaborately and colourfully celebrated. They slaughtered rams during the Eid el-Kabir and were generous, handing out gifts of fried meat to family friends and acquaintances. During that festival also known as Ileya, the major Muslim festival, you could acquire a whole bucket-load of meat to sustain the family soup pot for weeks, without being a Muslim and without buying a ram.

Christians were not known to be that generous. Every Christian family was governed by rules of restraint. And so, Christmas restricted themselves to the killing of chicken or turkey; some families did not even bother to slaughter anything at all, and they did not violate any religious code, and in any case, Christians didn’t feel obliged to share meat with neighbours. The effect was that Muslim relations and friends had this funny song, which was a friendly way of accusing Christians of being stingy. "Ko s’ina dida nbe; Ko s’ina dida nbe, K’olorun ko so wa d’amodun o, ko s’ina dida nbe". The truth is that nobody took offence, nobody considered the songs derisory, instead the teasing by Muslims attracted shared laughter. Even if there was no meat to share among the entire neighbourhood, there was more than enough fun to go round as many Muslim children joined us to shoot the bangers and make lots of noise. Many of them in fact knew the Christmas songs; they also joined us to stage in our own neighbourhood then, what was called the Christmas masque, or in Yoruba: "Mebo".

The Mebo was a simple enactment, a blend of the secular, the profane and the religious, drawing its elements from a syncretic base. The Masque or Mebo was dressed like a Masquerade: his face was not supposed to be seen. He was the main attraction, backed by drummers and singers: we used pots and pans and maybe our mouths as drums. The masque danced and led the songs:

"Iya Kaa’le o

Wa dagba wa darugbo

Baba Ka’ale o

Wa dagba wa darugbo

Mebo yo robo

E ba mi wa so mi soro

Mebo O yo robo o

E ba mi wa so mi soro.

There is nothing Christianly about this type of song, but for us, growing up, we celebrated Christmas in the neighbourhood, mixing elements of all the religions and all the available modes. Even children of Egungun worshippers joined the Christmas celebration. And so we could start with Mebo yo robo, and shift to "We wish you a Merry Xmas…Good tidings we bring… Hark! The Herald Angels Sing… E lu agogo E lu agogo, E lu agogo o Olugbala de o, e lu agogo…Keresimesi, Keresimesi, …" followed by other songs in Yoruba, which connected well with the community and did not attract any objections. We went from one house to the other and some people would give the Mebo money, which we shared thereafter and used to buy more bangers and firecrackers. We went round night after night until Christmas Eve.

Our parents did not discourage us, knowing that it was all in the spirit of the season. They also did not have to worry about anyone getting kidnapped, or getting into any form of danger. It was a different Nigeria in those days. Those were the days of innocence when children were brought up to shun any form of ostentation and conspicuous consumption. It was the season of joy and contentment. Just as we celebrated Christmas in the town, there was also as much excitement in the villages. The prospect of a New Year, a week after, always made the season special.

But Christmas today is different. It has become a commercial enterprise for many families and investors, with little or no emphasis on the spiritual dimension. I don’t hear too many children going from house to house even in the same old town where I grew up, singing Christmas Carols. This new generation does not know Mebo. But they know Santa in Naija on their phones and similar animations. In our time, we talked about Father Christmas; today’s children refer to him as Santa Claus. There is no sense of community anymore, only a sense of rising expenses and religious isolationism. Many churches cannot even organize house-to-house Carols. Parents are reluctant to let their children go out to any stranger’s house, be they Christians or whoever. They don’t want their children kidnapped; they don’t want their daughters to be raped. Some of the churches have no buses, or they cannot even afford to buy fuel at N130 per litre. If anybody shows up at anybody’s door, singing Christmas Carols, these days, the door is likely to remain shut. The times are truly different. You can never know who the visitors are: they could be a band of armed robbers, dancing their way to your doorstep, to gain entrance and inflict harm.

I don’t see the excitement of old anymore. Many average families cannot even afford to travel home for Christmas. The cost is too high. The city of Lagos used to look deserted close to Christmas, because virtually all the non-Lagosians would have returned to their villages to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their kith and kin. This year, Lagos traffic is still as busy as ever. People are staying back. Even the more privileged families also don’t want to go to the village. They are afraid of being mobbed by all kinds of relatives looking for help. It is easier to tell people you did not see their text messages, or the account numbers they sent, even when you have not announced that you have surplus money to give away, but to go to the village and see them face-to-face, could be quite an ordeal. I have listened to various tales of harassment, reported by persons who have had to tolerate that cousin who has just taken a third wife, who wants to be supported to maintain the woman, or that in-law who wants to buy a motorcycle and his body language is like if he doesn’t get the support he wants, he’d be tempted to recall his daughter!

I really haven’t heard those peals of laughter that used to be the main feature of Christmas anymore. What I see is the sheer anxiety on people’s faces. Christmas has become so expensive. Many parents are practically panicking! The children of today are not interested in Christmas rice and chicken: that stopped being a special delicacy a long time ago. They want expensive gifts. And there are many capitalists cashing in on the taste of today’s children, to provide a variety of services and items that dig holes in a parent’s pockets. One parent remarked that he really does not know what to do. His salary has not been paid. His children would like to experience Christmas. His wife wants a special gift. His children look like they don’t want their Christmas to be "inconclusive." But in January, he will also have to pay their school fees for the new term.

On top of it all, our society today is more divided than it was even after the civil war. Our laughter is shorter; our hopes are slimmer. We will celebrate Christmas all the same because we are a people of faith and hope..…Well, "don’t worry, be happy!" Merry Christmas.

Buhari presents N6.08trn 2016 budget to NASS

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has presented a total budget of N6.08 trillion for 2016 to both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

President Buhari who arrived the Chambers at 10.01am said that the fuel pump price would for now remain at the present rate of N87 per litre for despite the oil glut , just as he apologized profusely to Nigerians for the pains currently faced following the continued fuel scarcity across the country.

The President who blamed the fuel scarcity with long queues on market speculators and resistance to change by some stakeholders, said, "the current fuel scarcity with long queues at petrol stations all over the country causing social dislocation is very unfortunate. Government profoundly apologizes to Nigerians for this prolonged hardship and misery. It is as a result of market speculators and resistance to change by some stakeholders. Government is working very hard to end these shortages and bring fuel to the pumps all over the country.

The President who disclosed that 30% of Nigeria’s annual budget will be committed to capital expenditure, however moved Capital Expenditure from N557 billion in 2015 to N1.8 trillion in the 2016 budget, adding that having reviewed the trends in the global oil industry, the government decided to set a benchmark price of $38 per barrel and a production estimate of 2.2 million barrels per day for 2016, with plans to focus on non-oil revenues by broadening our tax base and improving the effectiveness of our revenue collecting agencies.

He said, "the Budget was based on a benchmark oil price of $53 per barrel, oil production of 2.28 million barrels per day and an exchange rate of N190 to the US$.

"The projected revenue was N3.45 trillion, with an outlay of N4.49 trillion, implying a deficit of N1.04 trillion. Due largely to under-provisioning by the previous administration for fuel subsidy and the costs required to support the military operations in the North East, the Government had to obtain National Assembly’s approval for a supplementary budget of N575.5 billion. I take this opportunity to thank all members of the National Assembly for the prompt passage of that Bill.

Buhari who noted that government was aware of the harsh economic situation presently being faced by Nigerians, however blamed the situation on unbridled corruption and security challenges, adding, "We have demonstrated a strong will to fight corruption. I am sure you will agree that the sheer scale of corruption and impunity of the past explains in part, the economic challenges we now face. On these initiatives, and the many more to come, we shall not be deterred. We will pursue the recovery of everything that belongs to the people of Nigeria. No matter where it is hidden. No matter how long it will take."

Pay-as-you-use electricity tariff takes off, says NERC

The new electricity tariff regime approved over the weekend by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has removed fixed charges for all classes of electricity consumers.

Electricity distribution companies will from the next billing period no longer charge their customers monthly fixed charges.

A fixed charge is that component of the tariff that commits electricity consumers to paying an approved amount of money, not minding whether electricity is consumed during the billing period or not.

The commission yesterday broke the news in a statement issued in Abuja.

According to the statement, under the new tariff regime, electricity consumers will now pay only for what they consume from month to month. NERC Chairman/CEO Dr. Sam Amadi said: "This is good news for electricity consumers who have long asked for a more just and fair pricing of electricity. The regulatory commission had promised to address all the complaints against fixed charges through a regulatory process that promotes investments in the electricity industry without unfairly burdening electricity consumers. This is in line with NERC’s mandate to be fair in all its regulatory interventions."

Although the new tariff regime comes with an increase in energy charges, all electricity consumers (residential as well as commercial) will no longer pay fixed charges, so their total bills will depend on the electricity they actually consume.

Consumers will no longer be spending money every month to pay for fixed charges even when they do not receive electricity in their homes and business.

According to the NERC chief, "the objective of the new tariff is to enable prudent consumers to save money on electricity bill as they can now control their consumption and not pay monthly fixed charges".

For instance, residential customer classification (R2) in Abuja Electricity Distribution Company will no longer pay N702.00 fixed charge every month. Their energy charge will increase by N9.60. Also, residential customers (R2 customers) in Eko and Ikeja electricity distribution areas will no longer pay N750. 00 fixed charges. They will be getting N10 and N8 increase in their energy charges. Similarly, the burden of N800.00 and N750.00 fixed charges would be lifted off the shoulders of Kaduna and Benin electricity consumers. These consumers will see an increase of N11.05 and N9.26 in their energy charges.

The new tariff is also good news for commercial consumers. For example, commercial customers’ classification C2 in Ibadan and Enugu will no longer pay fixed charges of N17, 010. 00 and N22, 141. 00. Their energy charge will increase by N12.08 and N13.35.

In line with the transparent disposition to its operations, full details of the new tariff regime would be advertised in major national dailies and the Commission’s website within the next 24 hours.

Besides this cost saving element, the new tariff regime comes with renewed commitments by the electricity distribution companies (discos) to rapidly improve supply. These commitments are contained in service level agreements, which are based on the performance level agreements submitted by the new owners during the bid process. The tariff order also encourages the distribution companies to develop new sources of supply within their franchises to increase the quantity and quality of supply to target customers on a willing buyer willing seller basis. These measures are necessary to improve electricity supply across Nigeria and ensure that the distribution companies are working hard to increase investment that will ensure predictable and ultimately reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply.

Henceforth every disco should meter all its customers. The metering policy will be strictly enforced. For those willing electricity customers who paid for meters under the Cash Advance Payment Metering Initiative (CAPMI) but are yet to be metered within the allowable 60 days, they would no longer be billed under the new tariff regime. The discos will not disconnect them. There is zero tolerance for overbilling of customers. An unmetered customer who is disputing his estimated bill would not be expected to pay the disputed bill. He would pay his last undisputed bill as the contested bill goes through the dispute resolution process. This is a departure from the old practice which prescribes that customers should first settle the bill while dispute resolution is in process.

No electricity distribution company is allowed to connect new customers without metering the customer first. This is to close the wide metering gap of over 50 per cent and reduce high incidence of collection losses in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The Commission said: "The new tariff regime is the result of a transparent, rigorous and credible rate review process. The tariffs will lead to greater reliability in the provision of electricity. More people will progressively have access to the grid, more meters will be deployed and the need for self generation would be gradually reduced."

The Commission expects the electricity distribution companies to provide better customer service in all aspects of their operations and would hold the electricity distribution companies responsible for their service level agreements.

Chelsea appoint Hiddink to replace Mourinho

Chelsea Football Club has appointed Guus Hiddink to replace sacked Coach Jose Mourinho.
Hiddink will serve as first-team manager until the end of the season.
According to a statement by the club on Wednesday, the owner and the Board of Chelsea FC welcome back a coach with a wealth of top-level experience and success, including his previous spell with the club in 2009 when it lifted the FA Cup.
The statement added: "Mr Abramovich and the Board believe that Guus has what it takes to get the best out of our talented squad."
Guus was quoted the the statement as saying: "I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. However, I am sure we can all turn this season around.
"I am looking forward to working with the players and staff at this great club and especially renewing my wonderful relationship with the Chelsea fans."
The Dutchman will be at Stamford Bridge for Saturday’s match (today), but Steve Holland will take control of team matters for the game alongside Eddie Newton, who will now take on the role of assistant first-team coach.
Holland has been an important and influential member of the coaching staff since 2009, while Newton is Chelsea through and through, having served us as a player and a coach, re-joining the club in 2012 and helping it win the Champions League.
Hiddink took temporary charge of Chelsea in February 2009, losing just one league game as the team recovered from a poor first half of the season to finish third in the Premier League, guaranteeing Champions League football for the next campaign and signing off in style thanks to a 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton at Wembley.
That role was combined with being coach of Russia, one of six international posts he has held during a coaching career, which has spanned three decades.
Hiddink’s first managerial job was in his homeland with PSV, a club he had represented during a 15-year playing career.
As coach, he lifted three league titles and the European Cup in 1988.
Three more followed during a second stint there between 2002 and 2006, with the intervening years seeing him coach in Turkey and Spain as well as lead the Dutch, South Korean and Australian national teams.
As South Korea coach, he led them to a stunning third place at the 2002 World Cup on home soil, one place better than with the Netherlands four years earlier.
Having taken the Russian job in 2006, Hiddink led them to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 before taking the reins at Chelsea on a temporary basis in early 2009.
A 2-1 win at Aston Villa in his first game set the tone for the remainder of the season and it took a last-minute Andres Iniesta strike on a controversial night to deny the Blues a place in the Champions League final.
Hiddink’s first stay in west London ended well, however, with the whole of Stamford Bridge singing his name following Chelsea’s final home game of the season and the fans unveiling a huge "thank you" banner at Wembley prior to the FA Cup final, in which Chelsea came from behind to win.
Since then, Hiddink has coached Turkey and the Netherlands, as well as spending 18 months at Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia, where he signed Willian from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has cancelled the entire election that produced Udom Emmanuel as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Lagos Launches Smart Transportation

As part of efforts to address the challenge of perennial traffic situation in Lagos, the Lagos State Government has launched a campaign tagged "Smart Transportation for Lagos (STfL).

The STfL campaign which was executed through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) also coincided with the official launch of the BRT Extension from Mile 12 to Ikorodu, with an additional 434 new BRT Buses to ease commuters’ transportation in the area.

It could be recalled that the issue of traffic and its accompanying effects top the policy direction of the present administration in Lagos as the government has vowed to tackle the menace.

According to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the STfL campaign would encourage commuters to travel smartly within Lagos State to ensure less traffic. He added that LAMATA would be educating Lagosians in line with the three pillars of Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability on how to commute around Lagos smartly.

In the same vein, Director of Public Transport, LAMATA, Mr. Olugbenga Dairo, noted that "The initiative is expected to become critical in addressing the challenges posed by an increasing number of mega cities in both developed and developing regions in maintaining safety, easy flow of traffic, efficiency, friendly and sustainable urban environment."

Also speaking at the campaign launch, Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State, Dr. Dayo Moboreola, stated the Strategic Transport Master Plan for Lagos would help transform the state transport sector beyond its current challenges, adding, "The plan identifies possible transport infrastructure and services required to meet growing travel demand for Lagos State by 2032".

To tap into the benefits of the initiative which among others, promote efficiency, saves time and money, Lagosians are urged to planning their routes, embrace STfL by car-pooling; sharing a car with family members, neighbours or friends going to the same area or use non-motorised means of transportation being an healthy alternative.

The STfL initiative also encourages commuters to embrace technology and digitisation through the use of online conference and video calls as a way to avoid spending several hours in traffic.

The initiative further encourages drivers to drive safely and conduct regular auto maintenance while pedestrians are advised to make use of pedestrian bridges and sidewalks.

Stanbic IBTC’s Oba Akran Branch Turns Prostitutes/ Touts Den…Bank Ignores Security Warning (Photos)

The attention of the public has been drawn to an alleged unholy and wholesome transaction that is being touted to be brewing between some unscrupulous element of people, call girls and security officers of the South African financial institution, Stanbic IBTC, Oba Akran Avenue, Ikeja Lagos branch.

The bank which was recently in the news concerning the allegation of professional misconduct by the financial regulating body, that led to the suspension of some of its directors, is definitely not living to expectations of the general public in terms of security and reputation ethos.

The prostitutes who ply their trade around the Oba Akran Ikeja axis and who often come to unwind at the clubs within that avenue, Club Royale, Intro Bar, the Ikeja Capital Hotel etc now see the willing security officers attached to the financial home as their vault keepers just for a paltry tip of N100-N200.

According to a source, the security of the bank, unknowingly, keep some dangerous weapons for these night crawlers that they use to perpetrate all kinds of nefarious activities in the early hours when the clubs are closed for the day. The security also not minding the hues and cry of the general populace to the rise in security concerns within Lagos as a whole, the gate keepers would rather chose to pretend that they don’t know how dangerous this ‘help’ they are rendering to these society misfits can be.

It is alleged that this girls of the night aside their personal effects also hide or carry weapons in their handbags sometimes given to them by their lovers with which they attack and dispose their victims of their valuables.

We tried on various occasions before posting this report to reach the Corporate Communication of Stanbic IBTC with this allegation for clarification. We met the acting Communication Manager, Melvin Awolowo, a renowned journalist before moving into banking sector and this was the response given to us as regards the on-going activities on the bank’s soil.

" Nov 25 at 9:54 AM

Dear Michael,

Apologies for the seeming silence.

I really thought I’d responded to your email or at least acknowledge receipt.

Please note that we do appreciate your concern and are currently doing our own investigations into the matter.

We will notify you once we’re through with our findings.

Many thanks again.

Regards."

Almost three weeks after the receipt of this letter, the bank is yet to carry out the said investigation as these pictures were taken by yours truly yesterday, Wednesday at midnight. The security men were seen accommodating bags from the girls to keep and as well allowing cars to be packed in the bank premise for a token of N200. Some were seen carrying out all sorts of sexual acts in their car while some were sighted using the venue to smoke India hemps/marijuana since it’s forbidden to smoke them inside the watering hole.

Sometime wonder why South African businesses in Nigeria are faced with all kinds of challenges, if you remember the MTN saga, from the look of things, it’s necessary for the organization to put some structures on ground, the Nigerian-way, that will enable them carry out scandal-free businesses so they can compete favourably with their competitors

Great Ife and the failure of the gown, by Reuben Abati

I have been reading some depressing stories about the state of the Obafemi Awolowo University, formerly University of Ife, which provide an equally depressing metaphor for the state of higher education in Nigeria. Great Ife as that university is known to its staff, students and alumni, is probably Nigeria’s first model university in every respect. Its major competitors were the University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. But Ife was far ahead in terms of the beauty of its environment and the facilities made available to staff and students. Built with Cocoa money (not petro-dollar!) by the Western Region Government, that university was a perfect illustration of the idea of the university and it managed to produce generations of scholars and students, known for nothing but distinction.

I studied at the University of Calabar (Malabites!), and at the time, I took time out to visit all the universities I mentioned earlier. In those days, the top universities in Nigeria were tourism destinations. Ibadan and ABU had the best bookshops anyone could think of, and the bookshop in UNILAG was also professionally run. UNN students insisted that they attended the University of Nigeria! But Ife had the most beautiful campus. It was the only university that had a special publication titled "Ife University in Pictures." I remember receiving copies of that publication as a gift at different times from my friends: Kola Ogunleye, Akeem Adewuyi, and Kayode Ajala who served in the university as a youth corps member.

Whenever UNIFE students spoke about their university, you would think it was a little piece of heaven that had been converted to a university. They spoke about beauty, excellence, intellect and great scholarship. Every lecturer on the campus was painted like an Oracle at Delphi. So much mythology mixed with tales of absolute excitement attracted other students to the university. Curiousity once took

Arms Deal :Linda Ikeji Opens Up on N240million She Allegedly Received From Dasuki

Popular Blogger, Linda Ikeji has denied receiving N240million from former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
Ikeji had to issue the denial after one Kayode Ogundamisi tweeted that a popular female blogger in Lagos state received N240million from Dasuki.

So, social commentator and activist Kayode Ogundamisi tweeted this today...he didn't mention any names but I am now trending on Twitter. Many assume he's talking about me...and you can't blame them really. He said...popular! I'm somewhat popular! He said female.. I'm female...duh! Lol. He said Lagos...I live in Lagos...in a posh place called Banana Island..lol. #Flipsweave! #Just teasing!

So people are reacting and some actually believe it! That PDP or someone in the party gave me N240m? For what? Advert? This was why I didn't want to get politics advert money in the first place o...and but then some of you advised that I do when I asked here and now see the gbege that I have entered...lol.

But seriously for the record...no party registered or unregistered, no human being dead or alive gave me N240m for anything. The only advert I did for PDP was a page background take-over for former president Jonathan... and they asked for the space after I did a page background take-over for APC's Akinwunmi Ambode. (I'm sure you all saw it). The two parties paid me same amount. I had a politics advert rate which I sent to everyone who wanted to advertise on LIB! And it was a few millions ...which some of you followed to chop inside in the giveaway that April...lol. #Kidding!

Anyway, all these bad belle people looking for ways to bring a woman down...like I always say...you can't! Except you're mightier than God! Whether you like it or not, I'm a hardworking young woman who God chose to bless the work of her hand and is using me to bless others. Get over it! I am here to stay! Not going nowhere! *wink*. Make I go find una more news ojare!

I gave N600 million to George, Odili, Bafarawa, Nwobodo, others -Ex-minister Yuguda

Offers to recover N600m and help trace the balance
Bafarawa: I got N100m but Yuguda didn’t tell me where it came from

The embattled former Minister of State, Bashir Yuguda, has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he gave a total of N600million cash to six chairmen of the Contact and Mobilisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2015 general election.

He listed the beneficiaries as Bode George (South-West); Amb. Yerima Abdullahi (North-East); Peter Odili (South-South); Attahiru Bafarawa (North-West); Jim Nwobodo (South -East); and Ahmadu Ali (North-Central).

He said he instructed Jabbama Limited to transfer N300million to BAM Properties whose account detail was given to him by a former National Chairman of PDP, Bello Haliru.

Yuguda, who made the allegations in a Statement of Witness/ Caution which he wrote on oath, said he sent N200million to the erstwhile PDP Governorship candidate in Kebbi State, Bello Sarkin Yaki.

He said a former Governor of Zamfara State, Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi, also got N100million.

The statement is part of the proof of evidence against the former minister whose trial is scheduled to commence this week at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Yuguda will stand trial with ex-Governor Attahiru Bafarawa and his son, Sagir Attahiru; Dalhatu Investment Limited.

The ex-minister is expected to account for over N3.050billion including N1.1billion being part of the funds in the account of the ONSA and aggregate sum of N1,950,000 belonging to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which sum was transferred to Jabbama Ada Global Services.

The ex-minister said: "For the cash disbursement of N600million, it was meant for the six zonal chairmen for Contact and Mobilisation Committees for Election of 2015. The chairmen are Bode George, Amb. Yerima Abdullahi; Peter Odili; Attahiru Bafarawa; Jim Nwobodo; Ahmadu Ali. The sum of N100million was given to each chairman. I gave the money in company of Prof. Alkali, who was Political Adviser to former president. The zonal chairmen are for the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). I also instructed Jabbama Limited to transfer the sum of N100m to Dalhatu Limited on the request of Attahiru Bafarawa.

"I also remember that Bello Sarkin Yaki was among the people that the then NSA instructed that I send the sum of N200million to. He was the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Kebbi State."

Yuguda, who claimed that he had liaised with Stallion Limited, gave the details of other disbursements.

His words: "I knew the chairman of Stallion Limited whose second name I cannot remember. Between December 2014 to June 2015, on the instruction of the then NSA, I introduced Jabbama Limited to a staff of the company on the instruction of the chairman.

"When the account was in credit, disbursement was made from time to time on the instruction of the then NSA. Part in foreign exchange or transfers.

"I wish to add that sometime in February 2015, I instructed Jabbama to transfer the sum of N300m to BAM Properties. The account was given to me by Bello Haliru as one of the people the former NSA requested me to give money. I also remember that Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi was sent the sum of N100million on the instruction of the then NSA.

"Further to my statement of 30th November, 2015, I have brought the sum of $829,800(equivalent to N200m) and N600m was given to me to distribute to the six PDP Zonal Committee chairmen. I don’t know who are the directors of Dalhatu Investment Limited but funds were transferred to the company’s account on the instruction of Dalhatu Bafarawa for the total amount of N1.5billion received from the then NSA by Jabbama Limited.

"I shall endeavour to recover the sum of N600million given to the six zonal PDP committee chairmen, while I appeal to the commission to use their machineries to trace the remaining balance of the money transferred to various accounts."

The former minister however denied receiving another N200million credited to him.

"I have been shown transaction of N200million from the Office of the Accountant-General to Jabbama which Jabbama said it’s on my instruction but I cannot remember this instruction until I crosscheck," he said.

Some of the charges against Yuguda are: "That you Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki whilst being National Security Adviser and Shaibu Salisu, whilst being the Director of Finance and Administration in the Office of the National Security Adviser, Bashir Yuguda whilst being the Minister of State for Finance between 5th February and 16th April 2015 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court entrusted with dominion over certain properties to wit: an aggregate sum of N1.1billion being part of the funds in the account of the National Security Adviser with CBN committed criminal breach of trust in respect of the said property when you transferred same to the account of Jabbama Ada Global Services Nigeria Limited for the purpose of financing the campaign of PDP in the 2015 general election and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Vol.4, LFN 2004.

"That you, Bashir Yuguda whilst being Minister of State for Finance between 23rd December 2014 and 10th February, 2015 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court dishonestly misappropriated certain property to wit: an aggregate sum of $9,809,619 which was an equivalent of the aggregate sum of N1,950,000 belonging to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which sum was transferred to Jabbama Ada Global Services to be converted into the said dollars and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Vol.4, LFN 2004."

Meanwhile, a former Governor of Sokoto State, Alh. Attahiru Bafarawa, admitted that he collected N100million from Yuguda through Sagir Attahiru.

Bafarawa, in his statement to the EFCC, said: "I know Bashir Yuguda. He called me to tell me there is money to be given for (sic) the North-West Campaign Committee which I asked how much and he told me is N100million for the seven states and ask (sic) to give it to Sagir which he did and the money was sent to the states campaign committee between 20th and 21st of February 2015 for the PDP Campaign for General Election.

"He did not tell me where the money was coming from. I did not ask him where the money was coming from.

"Sagir is my son and I directed Sagir to send the money to state chairmen campaign committee for PDP North-West.
-The Nation
"I also received N100million (dollar equivalent) from the North-West Campaign Committee. The money was given to me in the PDP National Chairman, Alh. Adamu Muazu house in Abuja in the presence of all the zonal chairmen as listed …and after collecting all this (sic) money, I gave the money to Abdullahi Yauri who was the Secretary of the North-West Campaign Committee to share to the state chapter and Yuguda didn’t tell me where he got the money from."

Some colleagues can block my progress –Halima Abubakar

Background
I am an actress/producer and I have six siblings. My dad was a senior banker but he left when the bank liquidated. He pitched his tent with other organisations before he retired.

UN Peace Ambassador
I have visited the Internally Displaced Persons’ camps also and invited some musicians to perform for them. I have been at it for nearly a year.

Charity foundation
I started my charity foundation because I was motivated by the hunger I experienced when I was younger. I experienced so much hardship and lack when I newly relocated to Lagos some years ago. I was hungry and did not have money most of the time. I did not get help because some people were not compassionate to me. That made me develop the passion to help people in need.

Current projects
I have been working on other people’s projects. But, I have three of my own productions already in the works. One of the movies has been premiered and released into the market. I intend to premiere two others before they are released.

Typical day
I have not had a day of absolute rest in last two months. I am always working and it has been really hectic.

Personality
I am not the same person I was two years ago; I am more reserved now. It will be difficult to spot me at an event except you are used to my signature perfume. Also, I have not been visible lately because of my work. I do not even have enough time to attend weddings and the things that bothered me in the past no longer matter to me. I am also amazed at how matured I have become.

Motivation
My motivation in life is to get better than I am, to be good to mankind and to obtain the favour of God.

Fame
As a celebrity I am under so much pressure to please people. I speak bluntly whenever I am fed up with an issue. If I cannot handle a thing, I speak out without having to displease myself in order to please someone else. People are often surprised to know that I spend my hard-earned money to feed an entire school.

Instagram
I do not need to have a misunderstanding with someone before I post anything on social media. I only pay attention to those who understand what it means. I am a writer and I am addicted to quotes.

Competition
I am in an industry where people find it hard to congratulate you when there is good news. I often celebrate others and I am aware that not everyone can be like me. Most of my colleagues do not congratulate themselves whenever a feat has been achieved. I do not wait for people’s commendation because it would not fetch me money. I appreciate those who do and I do not care about the rest who don’t. Some of my colleagues are capable of blocking every avenue of opportunity that comes my way. I pay attention to those who do not clap when I win because they are the ones I must avoid. These same people will invite you to their movie set and act as though they are your true friends.

Hobbies
I have not had time for leisure for a long time. I only unwind when I am on vacation.

Tattoo
I had my first tattoo at 18. I got two other ones when I was 20. I once tattooed someone’s name on my body but I later covered it up. All my tattoos have meanings and I do not just draw them for the fun of it. However, some of them are invisible.

Beauty
I do not know if I have any special beauty routine but I know I bath more than three times a day. Even when I am shooting, I always find a way to have a bath. I like cleanliness a lot and I like to change my hairdo regularly. I also wear different colours of hairstyles depending on my mood.

Style
I love gowns. I like to cover myself partly because of the weather and also because I am more mature than I was in the past.

Woman with two vaginas ‘offered $1 million to star in porn film’

A 27-year-old woman whose rare medical condition means she has two vaginas has been offered one million dollars to star in a porn film, according to reports.

Hazel Jones had to lose her virginity twice and also has to have two smear tests due to her "one in a million" uterus didelphys condition but does not permit it ‘to make her shy’, revealing that she is so relaxed with her body that she visits fetish clubs with her husband.

"My quirky condition does not make me shy or hold me back.

"In fact, it’s something I celebrate," she reportedly told The Sun.

And now, TMZ.com is claiming that porn producer Steven Hirsch has made Hazel a huge offer to commit her genitals to film.

The website quotes a letter from Hirsch as reading: "You are obviously an extraordinary woman and I would like to make you an offer to star in an upcoming Vivid production.

"We would pay you up to $1 million for your services."

Additionally, it is reported that that she pick her own movie partner although Hazel is said to have not yet responded.

The site is also running a poll for users to vote as to whether they’d watch a porn film starring Hazel.

69% of 15,016 voters are currently indicating that they would.

Hazel, who has previously posed for an explicit Bizarre magazine photoshoot involving cuddly toy cats, honey and sex toys, explained that the condition has not caused her undue stress in the bedroom.

"I have never entered into a relationship without explaining the difference about me anyway, never had a bad reaction about it either.

"But so long as they are aware of what it is I have no issues whatsoever, I have a great sex life now."

When reminded that her boyfriend has a "choice" by Schofield, she quipped: "Most of them get one for the rest of their life, my fella has two."

Her condition means she has two separate uteruses, two vaginas and two cervixes. It occurs when a septum which usually breaks down between two tubes that form the uterus does not break down, leaving two uteruses.

"If you are not aware that you have got this it can be really uncomfortable, I thought I was having cystitis, I thought I was having urine infections from a young age, when I wasn’t. I was actually tearing the middle septum," she told ITV1’s This Morning hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby earlier this month.

She was 18 when her first serious boyfriend noticed something was "different", prompting her to go to hospital where she was diagnosed with the condition.

"They did all the tests and they told me within a couple of hours what it was. But the lady had such a heavy accent I still didn’t understand what she was telling me and I just sat there in the waiting room with these notes going, ‘I have no idea what I have just been told’.

"As soon as I found out what it was I told everybody! I thought it was amazing. It’s definitely an ice-breaker at parties. If women want to have a look, I’m quite happy to show them, it’s not something I’m embarrassed by."
