HID Awolowo Buried In Gold Casket
CHIEF (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo went home yesterday in a blaze of glory when the matriach of the Awolowo family was buried in gold casket. Six pall-bearers dressed in blue Aso Oke attires carried her.
She was brought to the funeral service at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State in a horse-drawn carriage at about 9.56am accompanied by her children, grandchildren and other family members.
Securitymen had a hectic time controlling both vehicular and human traffic.
President Muhammadu Buhari led Senate President Bukola Saraki, ministers, 16 governors and other eminent Nigerians to bid Mrs Awolowo farewell.
At about 1:57pm, the remains of the late matriarch were laid to rest beside her late husband inside the Awolowo Mausoleum while prayers were offered by clergy men and family members.
Senate President Saraki, who had earlier represented President Buhari, urged the children and family members of the deceased to keep the good name of the Awolowo dynasty.
But President Buhari whose chopper landed in Ikenne at about 2:10pm, headed straight to the Awolowo residence.
The funeral service was performed by Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of the Anglican Communion, Most Revd. (Dr.) Nicholas Okoh, who lamented the inability of the nation’s leaders to check the worsening spate of terrorism.
