Both intellectual and spiritual weapons were deployed to help the contestants last weekend as the fireworks of 2016 Cowbellpedia Mathematics T.V Quiz Show continued in Lagos.
One of the parents, Mrs. Josephine Okeke was the cynosure of all eyes as she was casting and binding, and sometimes speaking in tongues, to secure divine favour for her son, Favour Okeke, one of the contestants.
Okeke from Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja squared it up in the preliminary group with Ayomide Ajayi of Bibo Oluwa Academy Ilesa, Osun State; Emmanuel Igban of Ambassador College, Ota, Ogun State; Isikanye Praise of Federal Government Academy Suleja, Niger State; Ugozuchuwu Offor of University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu Campus; and Divine Uzagu of Federal Government College, Okposi, Abia State.
Mrs. Okeke, who said she abandoned a thriving Pharmacy career to have time for her children and the home front, explained that her prayer will bring down the favour and mercy of God to see her son through. “The race is not for the swift…but for God who shows mercy…and God says he will show mercy to whom I will show mercy. I believe God for my son. I am standing in the gap for him. God cannot fail, so, my son can never fail,” she said.
Okeke confirmed that God has been her strength and therefore was confident of her son’s success in the competition. “When you believe God and you do his will, he back up your words or utterances with action. I have been speaking success into the life of my son, Favour, right from the beginning, and my God has been confirming my words,” she remarked.
For Angelica Uzo, a female student from Loyola Jesuit, her mother, based in Abuja simply called her aunt in Lagos, Mrs Patience Okoh to stand in the gap. While Uzo’s mother was ‘firing’ from Abuja, Okoh was at the action spot in Lagos, making hard supplication to God for Uzo to succeed. She was seen pacing round the arena as her niece prepare for the Cowbellpedia ‘battle’.
“I am the mother here in Lagos, my sister called me up from Abuja yesterday that I should be here to monitor her. What it means is that I must do everything within my power to make her succeed…and the best I can do is to pray. This I have been doing,” she remarked.
Redemption Adebayo, a student from Model Secondary School, Alagbaka, Akure, Ondo State confessed that her father has been calling her every morning since she arrived to pray for her. “The whole family is praying for me, and we did a lot of prayers to seek God’s favour from the beginning of this competition,” she said.
Not a few parents believe that all efforts to see their ward succeed in the competition will be worth the while as the ultimate prize for this year is one million naira and an all-expenses paid educational excursion outside the country. The teacher of the winning students will receive four hundred thousand naira.
Parents and stakeholders in the education sector have also lauded Promasidor Nigeria Limited for bankrolling the initiative which is aimed at discovering and celebrating young scientists and inventors in the country
