The Mercedes-Benz GLE has marked a new era for the mid-sized SUV segment. Years after getting a new identity with a change from the M-Class nomenclature to the GLE, the best-selling Mercedes-Benz SUV continues to set the pace. In October 2018, the latest installment of the GLE was presented to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show with a number of mouthwatering innovations that are revolutionizing the premium SUV segment. Weststar Associates Limited authorized General Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria will be introducing the new GLE to the market by 1st quarter, 2019.
The new GLE comes with a handful of innovations that have completely reconceived the SUV trendsetter. Features like the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz assistance systems, 4MATIC which makes the GLE more off-road capable than ever, seating comfort with corresponding interior spaciousness and MBUX have been highlighted as the most important innovations in the new GLE.
The exterior design of the new GLE exudes a powerful presence. The front emphasizes this with the upright radiator grille in an octagonal SUV interpretation, the prominent chrome-plated under guard and the bonnet with two power domes. The distinctive headlamp design is another key feature; this comes with MULTIBEAM LED lights; the brightness of the main beam headlamps covers over a distance of more than 650 meters. The side view highlights the wide C-pillar typical of the GLE, large wheels in sizes from 18 to 22 inches and the pillared roof rails or the optional illuminated running boards. While the rear stands out with the rear lights, reflectors, and chrome plated under guard.
The interior design of the new GLE is luxuriously elegant and powerfully progressive. It comes with a sporty and stylish cockpit design in the dashboard. The dashboard support flows into the door panels, and the integral trim element likewise extends around the driver and front passenger areas to meet the doors. There is a new sports steering wheel with a striking, sculptured spoke design emphasizing the impressive appearance of the SUV's interior. Other features include good ergonomics, flowing leather surfaces, a broad area of trim and flush-fitting sunblinds. All the controls and displays are now in a new design.
The new GLE also comes with more space, it has a considerably longer wheelbase than its predecessor (2995 mm, plus 80 mm). This creates significantly more space, especially for passengers in the rear. Legroom in the second seat row has increased by 69 mm to 1045 mm. Headroom in the rear with the standard, fixed rear seat unit and 40:20:40 split backrest has been increased by 33 mm to 1025 mm. As a world first in the SUV segment, a second seat row with 6 fully electric adjustments is now available. Another key highlight is the luggage capacity which is up to 825 liters behind the rear seats and up to 2055 liters when the second seat row is folded down.

The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is one of the key highlights in the new GLE, it makes its debut in a Mercedes-Benz SUV after its successful introduction in the A-Class last year. This latest generation multimedia system comes with even more improved functions when compared to the first edition in the A-Class. Improvements that this revolutionary system debuts include two large 12.3-inch/ 31.2 cm screens as standard, which are arranged side-by-side for an impressive wide-screen look. The information from the instrument cluster and media display is easily legible on the large, high-resolution screens. Showcasing elements in an emotively appealing manner underlines the comprehensibility of the intuitive control structure and impresses with brilliant graphics. Users can set up the MBUX with four different styles from Modern Classic, Sport, Progressive and Discreet style. Key features of the MBUX in the GLE include; the widescreen cockpit, navigation services, smartphone integration, vehicle set up app, LINGUATRONIC voice control, LTE communications module for Mercedes me connect services and Burmester surround sound system.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC comes with a 6-cylinder petrol engine systematically electrified with 48-volt technology. It has an estimated output of 270 kW (367 hp) and torque of 500 Nm. In the new GLE, 4MATIC comes with fully variable all-wheel drive that controls the torque distribution between the front and rear axle from 0‑100 percent depending on the selected driving mode, this greatly enhances the off-road capacity of the new GLE. In all variants of the new GLE, power is transmitted by the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the broad ratio spread of gears 1 to 9 allows a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy, efficiency and ride comfort. The driving experience in the new GLE is further enhanced with the E-ACTIVE Body Control 48-volt suspension.
The latest generation of Mercedes-Benz assistance systems have been introduced in the new GLE. Boasting of unrivaled functions in its segment like the Active Brake Assist which helps the driver to brake in good time when approaching the end of a tailback. Other assistance systems include the Active Steering Assist, Active Stop-and-Go Assist and the Active Blind Spot Assist which helps lower the risk of a collision with other road users, it monitors the blind spot when at standstill, and can warn the driver of approaching vehicles, motorcycles or bicycles when opening the door.

How Keystone Bank MD, Obeahon Ohiwere Lavished Millions On Birthday Party

Life is good for Obeahon Ohiwerei, the managing director, Keystone Bank. He literally lives in a bubble; unfettered access to tons of money, all things bright, bubbly and beautiful; and a growing rock star reputation as a new generation bank MD. Many of his peers and protégés would give a limb to swap places with him for just one day.

Indeed, there are bank MDs and there is Obeahon Ohiwerei, the reveler in charge of a major financial institution. When he turned a year older recently, he gathered his friends and associates for a ball and a blast at the Prest Lunch and Dinner Cruise, Lekki, Lagos. It was his 52nd birthday. 

Though not a landmark birthday, every occasion is an opportunity for Obeahon to flaunt his social credentials and love for the good life. And he knows how to throw a party to relish and remember for a long time. It was no less last Sunday. The color of the day was white and compliance was appreciable. Guests were welcomed to the exquisitely decorated boat where gourmet dining had been laid out for their palette and pleasure. 

From carefully selected hors d’oeuvre, mouth-watering menus, to after that tickle and tempt, and champagnes and cognacs and exotic wines, Obeahon had the guests feasting and bingeing with decent abandon while soft music played in the background. Mirth and merry hovered in the air. The host had a permanent smile on his face as he moved from table to table ensuring nothing was in short supply; a flute with bubbly that never ran short, never leaving his hand.

As the ship sailed, with the enraptured guests taking in the beauty of Lagos’ skyline at dusk, some of them whispered that they wished the party would never end. But the day after was a Monday. And for a man that had been likened to Nero, the Roman Emperor who fiddled while Rome burned, Obeahon has been working hard to shake off that perception. Appointed MD of Keystone Bank in 2017, Obeahon was in the saddle when the bank was sold to new investors in 2018. 

Perhaps it is why his recent birthday party was in no way as elaborate as the fun he had at Belvedere club in Houston last year where  nubile beauties flown in from all over the globe for a champagne party. His friends and those privileged to be at the  club that night still talk about it with romantic longing and a glint in their eyes.

The present dispensation of politicians is leaving no stone unturned to malign the good name and reputation of their opponents in whatever way they can to carry out their heinous act.

One of those who has been dragged into this cyber disrepute is former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Obong Nsima Ekere, who officially tendered his resignation letter honorably to focus on his gubernatorial campaign and activity.

It has been uncovered that some unscrupulous element of people has been sending a fake document as resignation letter allegedly tendered by the APC governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom state, Ekere on the social media sphere.

Be In The Know: Fashion Trends For 2019

It is no longer news that we are in a brand New Year and while we might still be reveling in some festivities, it is time to turn our attention to fashion trends that are projected to be big this year.

Tie and dye as well as statement tees are expected to be “in” this year as well if last year’s fashion shows are any indication. We can only hope that biker shorts die a natural death this year.

Several avant-garde looks that were worn as street style, whilst popular, might not make way into mainstream fashion. Items such as leather outfits, fur, fishnet, thigh-high boots and so on. Since our weather is usually hot, these styles would sadly never make it to the mainstream.

For footwear, barely-there sandals, masculine flat strapped sandals, statement sneakers, and block heels are expected to be huge. We already saw these at last year’s GTBank Fashion Weekend among several designers.

President Muhammadu Buhari Loves The “Niger-Delta”, Says NDDC’s New Ag. MD.

The Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Professor Nelson Brambaifa, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for demonstrating an enduring love for the Niger Delta region.

The new Chief Executive Officer of the interventionist agency, who spoke during the inaugural meeting of the new management at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, noted that the Federal Government had “indeed begun refunding over N1.3 Trillion owed the Commission since inception.”

Prof. Brambaifa, whose appointment was announced on Friday, January 25, 2019, alongside that of the Acting Executive Director Finance and Administration, Mr. Chris Amadi and the Acting Executive Director projects, Engr. Dr Samuel Adjogbe, said the new management team was a response to the growing unhappiness in the Niger Delta region over government’s commitment to developing the region and improving the living conditions of the people.

The Acting Managing Director said that Niger Delta had suffered enough and President Buhari recognised this and had taken prompt action to redress the situation and reassure the people on government’s commitment to their welfare. 

Prof. Brambaifa reiterated that President Buhari, had for the first time since the establishment of the NDDC, ensured that the Federal Government started to meet its statutory financial obligations to the Commission in full.

He said that President Buhari also ensured that all other statutory contributors to the funding of NDDC met their obligations, noting that the President also worked to restore peace and security in the region by tackling all grievances of the people.

The new NDDC boss said that the appointment of the management team was another step in the effort to offer hope to the Niger Delta people and restore their confidence and faith that he would take decisive action to rebuild the region.

Prof. Brambaifa pledged to do everything necessary to respect and implement the mandate of the Commission, “which is to facilitate the sustainable development of the Niger Delta, into a region that is socially stable, economically prosperous, politically peaceful and ecologically regenerative.”

He stated that it was necessary to start work immediately, stating: “The task of developing the Niger Delta is too important to be toyed with, and too compelling to waste time on.”

He urged all stakeholders in the Niger Delta to “join hands with members of the new executive management to ensure a smooth transition, as well as contribute to the immediate delivery of Mr. President’s mandate.”

Also addressing staff of the NDDC, Prof Brambaifa urged them to embrace teamwork. He declared: “I will change NDDC and take it to the next level.” 

Tony Elumelu Foundation Supports Sèmè City-Benin’s Int’l Knowledge and Innovation Hub

Sèmè City, the International Knowledge and Innovation City, has partnered with the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), the leading philanthropic organization empowering African entrepreneurs to train and empower additional 50 Beninese entrepreneurs. Sèmè City will join a growing list of governments, development agencies, and private sector organizations partnering with the Tony Elumelu Foundation to explore the Foundation’s sustainable model of philanthropy geared at addressing the root cause of poverty in Africa while creating jobs and economic wealth for all.

As part of the partnership with the Foundation, Sèmè City will invest $250,000 for the sponsorship of 50 additional Beninese entrepreneurs with innovative projects across various sectors ranging from tourism to health, energy, ICT, environment, fashion, media, entertainment and agriculture. This partnership aims to provide beneficiaries with the necessary skills to develop high-impact ventures as well as encourage female entrepreneurship.

The 50 beneficiaries will be selected in addition to the 1,000 African entrepreneurs selected during the 5th edition of the Foundation’s flagship Entrepreneurship Program. The beneficiaries will benefit from the training and mentorship programme offered by the Foundation, at the end of which they will receive $ 5,000 each to develop their businesses which will, in turn, contribute to the creation of jobs and wealth in Africa.
